Location: Independence, Tx | I have templates drawn up for a pattern that will be machine appliqued. it has some small parts, do i need a stabilizer? any recommendations as to what kind or alternatives to stabilizer? My many thanks! |

Location: Portland Oregon | Dana.... are you using fusible, or water soluble glue stick to help hold the pieces down? I usually don't use stabilizer when I use fusible.....
If you do use stabilizer, make sure to test a sample to see if you like the results... tear away will leave a little stabilizer under the stitches... Rinse away won't, but the last rinse away i used did not want to come off, and I had to resort to serging the pieces and putting them in the washing machine to get it out.

Location: Independence, Tx | I guess that is part of the problem. i havent ever done anything this small. I have MistyFuse and Steam a Seam 2. I think i have decided to stitch around the edge as opposed to skinny satin stitch. |

Location: Northern California | I love to machine applique & what works for me is drafting paper. It is thin kind of like tissue paper. I got a roll at an office supply. I cut a piece the size of the block I put a few safety pins then do a blind hem stitch or button hole stitch. It keeps the background fabric from puckering. It works beautifully every time. Then I just peel off the paper. I have also used just plain tissue paper at times.
Another thing I found is deli paper, I got a box at Walmart. The size of the paper is great for blocks I am working on.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

Location: Independence, Tx | I ended up going with Steam A Seam 2. It has been working out pretty well. I have found a pressing sheet indispensable to keep the gunk off of my iron. I will have to try the drafting paper next time, thanks for the tip Rebecca. I have finished two, Norma Sue (traditional looking, named for my grandmother who loved Sunbonnet Sue. Her mother had made her a quilt out of this style) and Jerri Sue (my own design named after our own Jerri, Lenice01, I couldnt work in a mohawk but did get a corset!).

Are you using a stabilizer with the Steam a Seam? |

Location: Independence, Tx | on the big pieces I havent been using any stabilizer. I just finished two others that have some really small areas on the shoes. (I'll post pictures in a bit) I am having trouble with the tension in turning tight corners and used some tissue paper there (as it was all i have). it has helped a little. |

Location: Rocky Mount, VA | Dana, I'm generally not a Sue fan, but those are adorable! Great job! My grandmother made a Sue coverlet, and my aunt loves to point out where each fabric came from - most of them were scraps from clothes that my mom and her sisters had outgrown. |

Location: Independence, Tx | Thanks, I have to admit I am not a Sue fan either really. We were given for pieces of fabric for this year's challenge quilt in my guild. They were "Interesting" aka didnt play well with others. this was the best idea I came up with to get all three into a quilt. In the middle picture of the group of three pictures, both of the dresses are a challenge fabric (Polkadots and weird stripes with a flower), the First pictures-- Sue's apron with birdhouses and a gold/yellow background is also a challenge fabric. the fourth is a zebra print, she isn't ironed on yet. I also have another that looks somewhat like the classic Jackie Kennedy images but I dont know that I really like it, it just doesnt look quite right if that makes sense. |
