Hi ladies -

I am thinking of getting a wider assortment of 108" wide backing fabrics for the shop. What I want to know is:

Do you like to use 108" backings?
If I had a bigger selection, would it be something you would consider purchasing?

I only use the extra wide backing fabrics for bed quilts.  I use Calico (muslin) for backing wall hangings etc as it is more practical and I don't want to waste money on fabrics that won't be seen.

I have ordered from a few US sites before and had one bad experience but that was due to postal issues but the store could have been nicer but hey.

I would certainly order extra wides if you decide to carry a few basics such as tone on tones.  I learnt from my longarm quilter that I use here in the UK that Batiks are not particularly good for longarm machines as the threads don't penetrate the fabrics as well as normal fabrics.

How many colours were you thinking of ordering in Jess?

Funny, Jess, I was just thinking about that 108" fabric over the weekend! I've only bought some twice; I find it harder to work with as far as getting it square and even. I'm pretty short, so that probably has a lot to do with it. To me it's easier to piece regular width fabric.

I love the extra wide backings. I do not enjoy piecing large pieces of regular width fabric to make a large backing and since most of the quilts I make are large the 108" stuff is my backing of choice.

No sure Milica - it depends really on if folks are interested in buying them. I have brown and cream in the store now, and they don't sell very well at all. I wonder if it is the color choice or if many of my customers are like Donna and don't like to fiddle with squaring them up.....

Jess, the times I've purchased 108" fabric, it was from JoAnn's. It was not folded neatly before being rolled on the bolt, and not rolled neatly on the bolt. I'm guessing better quality fabric is probably packaged better, too! Anyway, the stuff from JoAnn's was wrinkled and very hard to get folded straight.

i don't like squaring them up... I have an easier time using flat bedsheets of a high thread count. Thats what I've used for most of my backings.

I use 108 for almost all queen and kings (and have several waiting in the wings as I buy 3yds of them when I see them on sale now!) I'm off to have a look-see of the one Jess has!

I like the bigger backings also. I hate sewing backings together. It doesn't pay to buy the cheaper stuff at Joann's, but the stuff you get at the quilt store is usually a lot easier to work with.

Here is a link with some tips for working with the wide backings. I have used these instructons a lot for squaring up wide backing fabrics. (Click on this -->) Wide Backing Tips and Uses
