Expert Posts: 4008 ![]() ![]() Location: New England | Thank you, my friends, for your kind wishes and prayers ... Charlie is home now, but still in a lot of pain and is having difficulty walking. He will be out of work for at least a week. Right now they are just treating this with a vast array of medications. He will see the back doctor next week. He is already starting to get cabin-fever from the lack of activity. So when you have a quiet moment to send us out a prayer or two, please do and we will just soak those healing vibes right up ... :-) Pat

Expert Posts: 3574 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Portland Oregon | Prayers are being said in both your names.... all you need to do is ask. Charlie is going to need to be able to lean on you for so many things while sorting this out. Make sure to get someone else to shovel all that snow.... Hope the specialist has some answers when you see him.

Expert Posts: 4008 ![]() ![]() Location: New England | Good Morning ... Thank you all .. We do know what the problem is ... a herniated disc in his lumbar with a bone spur that is hitting a nerve coming out of his spine ... we are just waiting to see if this will be heal or will require surgery. If it is the latter, it will not happen for a month or so, most likely. We are hoping for no invasive procedures and he is being treated with anti-inflamatories and is home and allowed to move about on a limited basis but is out of work on short term disability. It is very much a wait and see thing. Both of us want it over with yesterday but that is not an option. This is all a result of too much snow and ice this winter and the fact that he just goes and over-does it instead of waiting for the kiddos to be able to get here to help. The emergency room nurse took one look at him and said ... "so he has been doing too much with the snow-blower, has he?" .. so it is that and hauling 50 lb bags of rock-salt around ... Good thing we do have the kiddos to help with some of the things that need doing around here ... and we need to get the Matt here after he gets out of work today to clear the walks and driveway again after yesterday's storm ... we did not get too much more, though, ... only a few inches of white fluffy stuff. so please keep the good healing wishes coming ... thanks, friends ...

Expert Posts: 1364 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Iowa | {{{{{{{{Pat & Charlie}}}}}}}} I know that back pain is no fun...Just make sure he takes it easy like the Doc says. That is the biggest thing. I didn't follow his orders very well either when I hurt my back last fall until I was totally down with it. Don't let Charlie be dumb like me! Tie him in his chair if you have to...helps to keep him down! ![]() Jami

Expert Posts: 1455 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Sorry I missed this the other day. Prayers going up for you and yours, Pat! Tell Charlie that the pain meds are there for a reason! I know most men don't like to take them but it will keep him from having other problems! When you hurt, your blood pressure goes up! You can cause muscle strains or even pull a muscle due to the tension and stress! Tell him I know what I am talking about! My DH, Robby has been throught this twice. His problems were in his neck and he is now disabled and only 46. Make him take it easy and take the meds the doctors gave him. They did it for a very good reason! Elite Veteran Posts: 808 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Pat, I hope they can take care of the problem without surgery. Though, I will say, my DH has had 2 back surgeries himself and they're getting so much better and easier. Even the difference between his first and his second was phenomenal, and they were only 3 years apart. After the 2nd one, he was walking the next day! I know they've come out with a few more options since then, too, so make sure your doctor keeps you informed. I know surgery is the least attractive option, but really, they are getting SO much better. So try not to freak out if it comes to that. We're all praying for you. (((hugs!)))
