Star Banner QOV 71" x 92"

This Quilt of Valor is going to Sgt. Richard “Craig” Farrar He served from 1974-1980 in Okinawa, Japan.

Craig is a third generation Army man! His grandfather, RC Farrar Sr. served in 3 different campaigns during WW I and was even shot! His father RC Farrar Jr. served from 1944-1946 as a T5 Tech Sergeant in Europe during WW II.

His family has been recognized by local newspapers for their loyal service to our country!

Craig has been nominated for this quilt by Sherry Watson.

This layout is set up so that 25 dark blue stars will float on a unified solid background. A single member will supply all block makers and the piecer with the white needed to complete their blocks. The white being used is Michael Miller's "Soft White", which is not as bright as some whites, but it's not yellow either.

Please make sure that your star blocks measure 8 1/2" and that your points will not be cut off when pieced together in the quilt. Here is the link to the block tutorial for the Sawtooth Star block.

http://www.heyquilty.com/content_downloads/BAGG_Sawtooth.pdf

(Remember to use the instructions for the 8" finished star)

Choose from dark and navy blue prints, that read as more blue than any other color when you look at it from a distance. small textured prints, tone on tones, dark blue background patriotic prints... etc.

If each person sending components will send a dollar or two along with their blocks, it will help with the cost of postage from the piecer to the quilter and the finished quilt to the final recipient.

Here is what we need to make this beautiful quilt for a well deserving veteran. Since we have 3 more nominations in the works, I'd like to get this one started and on it's way. Let's have all blocks and top components sent to the person who signs up to piece the top by March 31, 2016. That gives us 8 weeks to fit this into our schedule and get them mailed.

We need:

** 24 Sawtooth Star blocks (unfinished 8 ½” finished 8”)

Scrappy Dark blues and Solid White

I think I'll send in the red for the borders. I'll buy it next month and get it sent in then, if that is ok.

If you need me to do more blocks just send the extra white fabric and let me know. I do have a lot of dark blue fabrics that I can use. (Don't we all? LOL!)

Thanks everybody for your help so far on this quilt top!

I also want to say that I plan to do some of these blocks too, Denise but I will let you know how many when I get through with the family! I want to get Craig's wife and 2 daughters do one so they can have a connection with the quilt! Maybe even his granddaughter! I need to ask them first though! They don't sew so it would be a tutorial Saturday when I could get them all together and get it done! I think it would make it even more special to him with their contribution!

Sherry, Great idea regarding family working on blocks. How about I send you enough of the white for 4 or 5 blocks and then you'll have it on hand if you get everyone together.

I've been quilting a baby quilt this week, and that requires covering my cutting mat. I got it done enough tonite that I can move it. I will be cutting and addressing white fabric this weekend and will mail on Monday next week to those who have already signed up.

What a good idea, Sherry!
Denise, I hope you sent more white fabric to me as well. Doesn't look like many have signed up for blocks.

I can send binding fabric and help with backing funds. Let me know who / what.
Cant guarantee my star points well enough for doing with special white fabric so will have to pass on the blocks.

Great news! I am going to be Cutting the white fabric to go out to star makers this next Tuesday (after the holiday). If we each make 4 blocks (those that have signed up) we have all our blocks. I have an offer (annonymously) from someone here in Oregon that will donate backing fabric and batting! We still need a piecer, and a quilter, as well as our presentation case. Since I am a paid member of QOV, I can request a long arm quilter to quilt the top if noone steps up to volunteer. The issue with that is I don't have any say on the time frame of how quickly it gets quilted, since these are all volunteers I don't have any control of.

Trish... instead of your $ going to part of the backing, we can use it to help with the cost of shipping. The backing that is being donated is a wide back, I believe in either a cream, or white, or medium blue... but I'm not positive. This is someone from my local guild that saw our facebook post. She approached me at Guild meeting Monday evening.

Denise, I will piece and/or quilt it. It's less postage if the piecer is also the quilter, but if someone else wants to do one or the other I'm okay with that, or with doing both.
