Hi Everyone! I will be hosting a block exchange and will need a co-hostess. Anyone interested? Here's how the exchange will work. We will be grouped into groups of 6 quilters. Each member of the group will chose a 12 1/2 inch pieced block pattern. and color scheme or theme, ie: reds with white backgrounds and pm to me. Each month I will reveal the pattern and you will make 6 blocks. You will keep one block and send the other 5 to me with a self-addressed stamped envelope. I will send back to you 5 blocks, one made by each member of your group. Sounds like fun doesn't it????? These six blocks can be made into small crib quilts to give as gifts or to donate to charity. Use a 2 1/2" sashing and first border from a coordinating fabic. Then a 1" inner border. And a 3 1/2" outer border. This works up to a 36" x 50" quilt. If you are interested in participating let me know by 9-15-12. We will officially start the exchange on Oct. 1st with the first mailing to me on the 30th. Then we will continue to mail on the 30th of each month. I will let you know the new block on the 25th of each month. This will be a six month exchange.

Ok, sorry for the confusion. I guess I posted this twice without knowing it and only edited one of them.

As for color requirements, here is how it would work. Your block choice for the month is Yankee Puzzle. You want group members to make them in blues with white background. So, the main parts of the block would be in blue (the puzzle design), the color blue chosen by each individual group member from her stash. The backgound would be white fabric, usually white-on-white print or a tonal.

Let's say your block that month is Ohio Star and the color combo is white with red background. Each member would chose a white-on-white/tonal print from her stash for the star and a red print for the background pieces.

I participated in one of these years ago and I really had a great time making the blocks and receiving the blocks. It was really interesting to see what prints and colors each lady chose.

Cherie - I would love to join in  this sounds like lots of fun!

My only concern is posting from my side of the water: postage will be fine I think, I will send you $$$ with my envelope, the problem could be in the time it takes for packages to reach you, I would hate to be responsible for holding up the swap.

Let me know what you think (and everybody else too please). I will not be offended if you decide it better if I opt out of this one, I can still follow and enjoy from the sidelines.

Cheerio for now,

Sue x

Sue, I think if you mail by the 25th instead of the 30th, it should be fine.

I haven't seen any problems with mail from your country. I know that Milica has a devil of a time, tho.

Please, join us. We will just play it by ear.

We don't have to have a top finished in one month, right?  Can just save up the beautiful blocks from our friends to use at another time, right???      Oct through Dec are my "rushing to finish those last minute items" , so I was on the fence about this exchange.  I've thought about it and thought about it and think I can do it too...    It sounds like so much fun. Please add my name to your list.

Come on, Sherry!    remember all 6 of your blocks each month could be exactly the same.... (or scrappy if you have smaller pieces in your stash)... just need to fit the color theme for the month.

Glad everyone else is starting to sign up......

  • Cherie
  • Cindy
  • Denise
  • Sandy
  • Sue
  • Sherry?  (remind  KEEP BUGGING her later.....  )

We can have more than one group of 6... so come on everyone!  you know you want to!

Cherie... I have a question... since everyone chooses their colors and the block pattern before we start.... can we draw each month's  person and choice at the very beginning of the swap?  Then some could work on their blocks ahead of time so that they are ready to mail when that month rolls around?   (We did this for a swap over at BC before it folded... and it was nice to know what was coming up.... and to be able to plan around other committments)

Yay! We now have enough for one group If we get another six, I will mix them up and choose the groups.

Yes, Denise, we can pick the blocks at the beginning of the swap if that will make it easier for everyone. The group I was in several years ago posted the new block at the beginning of each month. I do recall that it did make it a little hectic, especially if I didn't have the colors involved.

Everyone needs to pm me their block choice and color schemes when they sign up. Quilters Cache is a great site to choose blocks from.

Please, please make sure that when you make your blocks they are 12 1/2 inches unfinished. I have been working with some of my blocks from a few years ago and some are 11, 11 1/2, 12, 12 1/2, 13. It is sooooo frustrating trying to put them together.

So............who else wants to play???? Dorian, Pat, Tricia........

Cherie.... about those odd sized blocks....

Here is what I do..... (not saying by any means that it is ok to send blocks that aren't right)..... but the corbett trio #3 quilt that I just finished had blocks of many sizes..... I framed each block with a 3" sashing or frame,  and then trimmed them down to be all the same size.    I have also done a contrasting fabric the same way... if they are close,  I cut them straight,  but if they are really offsize as a group,  I twist my ruler a bit and cut them so that they sit wobbly in the  block.  this way the difference in sizes is hidden from the eye.

Here is another way....I frame each block with a smaller border and just square them all up to the same size...

If you look closely at the small solid brown frame on these blocks, you will notice that one is different size than the others... but the sashing is consistent on all.   The lower left block was larger than the rest... somewhere in the quilt, there are a couple with wider brown frames.....

I really need to get this one quilted...
