Let's put our heads together and refine this idea so we can decide how it should work.

The basis for the idea is to make blocks that reflect our family heritage, geneaology, or the meanings behind our family names.  Many of us have been able to trace our heritage back several generations, often spanning several countries.  If you have a good resource for digging information (NOT dead relatives) up...please post it here so perhaps it can help someone else in their search.

Once the retreat is over we will try to get this fully refined and outlined so it can begin.  Put your suggestions and finds here so we can keep it all in one spot!

I love this idea!  If anyone needs help "digging up their relatives", I have a membership in Ancestry.com and will be glad to do look-ups.  This is only good for the U.S.A. tho' - I don't have the full membership as it's too pricey.  Another good resource that's free is http://www.familysearch.org/  This is the Mormon church site and they have lots of good info.  Another is www.rootsweb.com.  If anyone needs help getting started in this, feel free to email me.  I've been doing genealogy research for many years and while I don't consider myself an expert, I do have lots of experience in hunting those elusive ancestors!

As for this challenge, why not run it similiar to the Song challenge - the one where we make blocks that represent song that have special meaning to us.  Even if a person only knows the names of their grandparents, that's enough there for 4 blocks, their parents would be another 2 blocks.  The blocks could even be something that represents  the ancestor's occupation, if nothing else.  Like one of my ancestors was a blacksmith - I could make a block that represented that.  Or something that represents immigration - one side of my family came from Germany in 1857 on a small sailing ship - so I could make some kind of a ship block.  I have another ancestor who was a sea captain - Mariner's Compass would be good for that.  One of the first blocks I'm planning to make is called "Castle Walls" - my great-grandfather was born in Germany in a little village in the shadows of the ruins of Gleiburg Castle.

The possibilities are endless, so after the retreat, let's see if we can get this going!

This is going to be a very interesting challenge. I compiled a book a few years back with lots of info on my father's side, don't have a lot of info for my mom's side but will see what I can come up with.

OK Jenn - I'll TRY to be patient - but patience isn't one of my virtues!!!  Just kidding'!  You take care of that cold and get to feeling better - then we'll all be ready for this challenge!

Hugs,

I'm going to try my best to get this ironed out and have some guidelines up on Monday. I am going to toss this around with my mom and MIL as well to see what they have to contribute over the weekend, and I'll have a long drive home to try and put it all down into an organized fashion. :D

Sounds good to me, Jenn!  I'm looking forward to this.  Been in a kind of "slump" lately - mild depression (not helped at all by the news today that I've lost yet another cousin), just feel draggy, restless - probably a lot of it is because of the weather, altho' today was sunny for a change.  I just need a project to fuel the creative juices and get me perkin' again!
