I don't know how many of you have been around BC as long as I have, but when I joined just over 3 years ago, we had a friendship swap each month. Everyone who wanted to participate would sign up, and we would be paired off with one other person. The purpose of the swap was to spend that month really getting to know that person, and at the end of the month, we exchanged small gifts, I believe 10.00 or so was the max. The gifts didn't necessarily have to be quilting related, but as we got to know each other we might find something else we would like to send.

We only ended up doing 2 or 3 of these before they were discontinued for whatever reason, but I had asked the people I was paired with to make a block for me as my gift, and I had planned to turn it into a friends quilt with 1 year of blocks from my friends. I thought it was a really cool idea, and a great way for us to meet each other and get to know one another without proclaiming our whole lives publicly. We traded alot of private messages.

My first swap was with a lady in Austrailia, and being from Texas, I sent her some Texas Bluebonnet seeds, bluebonnet fabric, and a coffee mug with Texas stuff on it. I figured it was something she might never see otherwise. She sent me the cutest coaster that she made, and a beautiful block in my favorite colors, which I still have sitting out on my sewing table. It was so cool to get to know someone from another country and learn a little about their way of life. You'd be amazed at how different some of the most mundane things can be!

Since all that is required of this would be the time to talk and get to know each other, and possibly one small package that wouldn't necessarily involve sewing or fabric, would anyone else be up to starting up this type of ongoing swap again? I know alot of us are on tight budgets so this would be a simple way to become more involved with the awesome people here without investing alot of money. Obviously the benefit of making closer friends would far outweigh any material items we might gain in the process, but it's always fun to receive a package in the mail and not know what might be inside :)

I'll keep a list through the end of the month, and send out partners on the first of March if that's ok. If we need more time, we can start it on April 1.

oh no Jacqui....I think that makes it even more fun, especially since most of the swap just involves emails :) I had a blast getting to know someone who lived halfway around the world. It made for some really fun conversations! I dont think anyone would want to keep those outside the USA from being able to participate...it just wouldnt be right!

I was adamant that I would not sign up for any swaps, as I do not have the time to fulfill the obligations. However, this is simple, easy, and inexpensive. Also, what better way to get our members acquainted! I am definitely in.

Jenn - Will you take new signups each month so that the new members joining can participate? Also, can we give you hints before you assign names and let you know the people who have signed up that we don't know very well? (For instance, I pretty much know Nawma about as well as I can! ) If you would like, the administrators can help you keep an updated list of the participants on your first post so that everyone knows where to find it. (The forum will only let you edit your post for a limited amount of time, but admin's can always do it.)

yes, this can be an ongoing month to month one, and I'll just start a new sign up thread for each month. I started a spreadsheet with everyone so I can keep track of who is signed up, and make sure that month-to-month we dont repeat partners. :)

OH....um...I'll edit my first post to include those who are in so far.

....or not. I cant seem to edit my first post. If Jess can add this info to the original post she can do it. Otherwise March 1 I'll post a list of participants and their partners, along with all the guidelines, etc. in a concise, easy to read format.

oh...Jess reminded me of something important....any takers to act as a co-host for me? It really wont involve much other than keeping a list of who's involved and seeing that everyone has been in contact with each other. No mailing or anything like that except between you and your partner.
