If I was to pick a particular fabric color group... it would probably be neutrals.... whites, creams, beige.... tiny prints, tone on tone types....
One can never have enough neutrals.....

other colors? I would probably pick greens.... another important staple to have on hand.... (I know.. Ms Cindy thinks that PURPLE is the neutral! )

That is my input..... will we put another poll up?

Here is my input. I would like to do a specific light/dark color. Like red on white, white on red. Or purple on white, white on purple. Or blue on white, white on blue. I guess you get the idea!!! But I would go with whatever the general concensus is.......

I love the idea of jewel/neutral colours, but just a thought, when you say 'jewel' are you all thinking of precious stones? if so that would make it all very sumptious and would include rich reds, blues, greens and purples and even rich gold maybe? I envisage a very rich and exotic quilt in the making!  Am I on the right wave length or have I missed the point enitirely Also what about the fabric, would it just be cotton or could velvet and matt silk or satins be used, similar to the mixes used in Victorian crazy patchwork quilts?

Jeri, she was also asking about different fabrics, not just quilting cottons -that needs to be addressed. :)

Gerda - 2010-12-09 7:12 PM Jeri, she was also asking about different fabrics, not just quilting cottons -that needs to be addressed. :) Gerda

Thanks, Gerda, for highlighting this question for us.

The type of fabric for these layer cake swaps has always been addressed.

If you read the guidelines in the first post of each Q&N Fabric Swap your will see this ...

"Important note...please send only 100% cotton quilting quality fabrics and please be sure you wash and press all fabrics first."

In this new swap, whatever the choice for color we will be following this tried and true quilting fabric standard.

To help clarify the term "jewel tone" I am going to quote the following definition from quilting.about.com ...

"Tones are created when gray is added to colors. Adding gray results in colors that are less intense versions of pure colors."

... see rest of the interesting article here for more information about choosing colors for a quilt ...

http://quilting.about.com/od/colorfabrics/ss/color_quilts_2.htm

For "Jewel Tones" here is an illustration ... using black for contast in this photo ...  this block is aptly named "Jewel Box"  ...

http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/jewel_box_quilt.htm

Hope this helps ...   Pat

Jeri ... lol!

I know it was Sue who asked the question about fabric types ...

Sue ... I have seen many quilts at quilt shows in a crazy quilt pattern using cotton quilting fabrics as the pieced background with lots of embelishments ... I have also seen some with bits of velvet dresses and silk ties sewn in, but I have never done this myself ... if we do jewel tones and you decide to do such a project and scavenge and include some scraps of those luscious other fabrics like velvet and silk, please share your WIP and finished quilt with all of us ...

I am getting excited to see what we will all choose for this next layer cake swap ...

I just love swapping and sharing my stash and quilt shop hopping to find the perfect fabrics for a swap ....   Pat

oh, Pat... now that you shared that jewel tone pic .... I'm thinking jewel tones and blacks that read as solids.... very black tone on tone prints.... maybe a mix of 2 black pieces and 8 colors per layer cake.... enough to get a nice splattering of different blacks throughout a quilt for a little sparkle....

oh, there are so many combinations!
