Threadwork Challenge
Co-Hostesses: Jeri and Gerda

Guidelines

1: Thread has to be the main element. Your project can be hand or machine stitched, embroidery, sashiko, redwork, whole cloth quilting, counted cross-stitch, thread painting, embroidery squares set into a quilt, etc, so long as the thread work is the showpiece. (Knitting, crochet, and tatting are not included.

2: Projects may be started for the challenge, or be UFO’s, but we request you do not enter a project you have previously completed. The point of this challenge is to get our creative juices, and abilities, flowing.

3: Signups will be taken through January 15th, 2011, and the challenge will take place during January and February. The deadline for picture uploads will be midnight CST March 15th, 2011. All participants who enter a completed piece will be entered into a drawing with a prize provided by the Quilt and Needle.

4: Each participant should post a picture of their pattern and materials they are starting with at the beginning of the challenge. It doesn’t have to be exact, some of us add along as we go, but post what you have.

5: Pictures of in progress work are welcome to be posted, but only completed pieces will be entered into the drawing. (The threadwork should be done, but the whole project does not have to be done. For example, if you are doing thread painting on a quilt , that should be done, but having it quilted and bound is not necessary.)

6: Have fun and be creative!

From Jess: We will start a poll at the end of the challenge, and invite all of our newsletter subscribers and facebook followers to cast a vote. If we have at least ten participants, the winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the Q&N store. 2nd place will receive a $25 gift certificate. We need at least ten participants girls! Who's in?

Signups:
1. Jess (maybe)
2. Gerda
3.  Cindy
4. Jeri
5. Sue
6. Sally
7. Dana
8. Sharon
9.  Denise

If I am caught up by the end of the year, I would love to participate. I have the perfect project that I would love to make! Mine would be thread-painting.

I bet there are some cross-stitchers out there with some ideas for this!

Oh, you enablers. Finally something at Q & N that I can join in. I have the basic idea but the rest will have to speak to me as I go. It will begin as a cross stitch piece. Currently blank Aida and embroidery floss collection. So, pretty please, sign me up. You realize this will delay a lot of my UFOs. Oh well. It will be fun!!!!

Yay!!!! Agnes is in!!!! Yippee!!! Agnes, honey, just look at it as a "break from the usual" - that's always a good thing, crafty-wise!!!

I look forward to seeing what you come up with this time. :)

Here's the first question already.
Rule 4 states: Each participant should post a picture of their pattern and materials they are starting with at the beginning of the challenge. It doesn’t have to be exact, some of us add along as we go, but post what you have.
The plan is in my head but I need to pick and choose from at least three different patterns just for my first step. Is it okay as long as I put all three patterns in my "beginning" photo?

Gerda--It is not that much of a break from the usual. It is just a detour on the road of the WIPs or UFOs lists. All patterns have bugged me for a number of years. They're just been quietly waiting for a challenge. Tonight is the first time I entertained the idea of combining. There's quite a stack being put back, totally ignored, once again. The basic idea has really blossomed already.

Okay, here is my pattern, if I get caught up in time. Don't anyone be mean!  I know this is a bit artsy for most of you.

This is a painting that my friend made, and I don't know why, but I have always loved it. She says it is not finished, I think all it needs is a bowler hat and it will be finished... not sure why or where to put the bowler hat. Anyway, I will use a plain white or cream fabric in the background, probably applique the green bubbles, then use thread painting to make the forest. The bowler hat will be made of fabric.

I think it reminds me of the second pic I am posting... thus the bowler hat...

I've played with getting a photo of my three patterns and supplies. To do this I decided I needed to get my camera set up with date stamp. That was a side trip in itself. About 10 photos later, I have my photo ready as much for my design process as for posting here.

oh my jess!!!  your plan sounds very interesting!!  and i do NOT mean that in any sort of snide or derisive manner nothing wrong with "artsy", not at all!  that's what makes everything so interesting - we all have different tastes yet we all can appreciate each other's talents

agnes, so glad you are joining this challenge!

hey, gerda!  GMTA!!!!!  why you ask?  well, just wait til you see my medallion row for the 2011 Row Robin!

jeri, i'm in!  but i got to think about which project i want to do - altho i'm afraid that whichever of my projects i choose would only seem pale in comparison to the other entries anyways, i will post my pic after i make up my mind - i got all month of december to choose right?

(You can tell that Cindy posted her own name on the list above, since it is in her own shade of purple and has her signature emoticon with tassles. Goober. Don't tell her I said that.)

Here's my beginning point photo. I am thinking a patchwork quilt idea with Sue as the block. Wording, how many, and so on will evolve as I stitch.

Do you have to have done the stitching yourself?

I have a box FULL of cross stitch (kind of dirty...needs a bath) my Momma bought me at an auction. I want to set the cross stitch embroidery into a quilt...somehow.
