a few of our members may remember last year's Song Lyric Blocks Challenge and that the project just kinda faded away after last august . . .

the monthly themes and the blocks that were made by those participating were lots of fun, so jess and i thought it was time to get this challenge back up and running!!

august, 2009, will be CATCH-UP MONTH!  anyone who is interested in joining this challenge may submit blocks, as many blocks as you wish, but only one block for each month's theme for january through august.  (i.e. - if you submitted blocks for january & february - like i did - and wish to complete blocks for all or just some of the months of march, april, may, june, july and august themes OR if you are a newer forum member or perhaps did not have the chance to participate before and would like to submit blocks for all or just some of the january-august themes

here are the monthly themes:

January - Musical Beginnings:   Think of the earliest songs that are important to you. Perhaps it is the music your parents listened to when you were young, a nursery rhyme you loved as a child, or a song your Grandmother hummed while cooking Sunday dinner.

February - Romantic Love:   Pick a song that has romantic significance to you – it could be you a song that was playing when you had your first dance at the prom, a song that celebrates your marriage or lifelong love, a song that was in your favorite gushy romantic movie –  anything that says romantic love to you in a special way.

March - Children:   You might pick a song that you and your children enjoyed together, or a song that you and your friends sang while playing in the yard, or a song that speaks to you thru the eyes of a child you love.

April - Whimsical, Playful, or Funny:   Think of a song that always makes you laugh when you hear it, or perhaps a song that someone you know does a funny rendition of.

May - Rock the House:   Pick a song that makes your feet move, or your backend gyrate, or one that just insists the sound be turned up high.

June – Friendship:   Pick a song that reminds you of a special friend – one that you and a special friend enjoyed when you heard it together for the first time or one that depicts an activity that you enjoy doing with your friends.

July – Loyalty:   Pick a song that says, "I will never forsake you or our cause." For you, this may mean anything from patriotism to gospel.

August - Anything Goes:   Pick any song that you love.

you may view all previously submitted blocks and each month's winners here.

at the end of august, a poll will be set-up to vote for your favorite among all the blocks.  the august 2009 winner will receive a prize from The Quilt & Needle webstore.

we will then finish out this year with the themes for september through december!

jess and i are so excited about the revival of this challenge - we just want to know one thing . . .

WHO'S GONNA JOIN US????????

Listen, I am super excited to finish up this quilt. I think it is such an original idea! I have only done two blocks so far, so I have several to choose from to get started. These blocks only take a minute, but as Mom says, this will be such a wonderful keepsake for our kiddos - a record (pun intended) of our favorite tunes!

The winner each month will receive a $15 coupon to the Q&N store!! (This will cover 4 FQ's and shipping, or you can apply it to any regular order).

So, shall it just be Cindy and I competing for all of those wonder FQ's?????

Well, I'm not really doing this (and I made a quilt, not a block) but this was the inspiration--and it's dedicated to the Q&N forum because of all your inspiration, encouragement, compliments, etc, "You are the Wind beneath my Wings"

Beautiful block, Sally! My first thought was "may the bluebird of happiness fly up your nose", then I saw your title. Boy, NO ONE sang that song better than Gary Morris!!

cindy's block for july - loyalty  "The Old Rugged Cross"

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

Refrain

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

Refrain

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.

Refrain

the words express a loyalty like no other . . .

The Old Rugged Cross. "On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross..."
One of my favorite songs and I want it sung at my funeral along with "In the Garden".
Very nice block, Cindy.
