what is tatting, exactly? I have several for needlepoint and cross-stitch. Would any of them be able to be adapted?

Here's a book of them! http://store.knitting-warehouse.com/244029.html

I just typed in needle tatting bookmark pattern and got lots of hits. Have fun! It's on my to-do list too - have had the needle and some thread for years, just never got to it - quilting happened

So is needle tatting basically the same as regular tatting, except you use a needle instead of your hand? I can tat...haven't done it in years, though.

Needle tatting is tons easier than shuttle tatting ... you don't have to learn the flip LOL (that's the dreaded part of the stitch that if you don't got it, you won't make nuttin' right in shuttle tatting), I think you can usually use the same patterns for needle tatting as you can for shuttle tatting ... you can't use the same patterns (I've been told, but haven't tested the theory yet) for crotatting (tatting with a teeny crochet hood made especially for it) as you can for shuttle/needle tatting.

The needle in needle tatting replaces the shuttle and sort of replaces the hand. I love it! No left hand cramps for this ol' girl :)
