Hey ladies we have several quilts that are about to be delivered to their respective charities and I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we keep count of the ones that have been delivered. That way we will have a place to go and watch our tally rise as the year progresses.

Delivered in April

Harmony Home

2 - Sweet Child's quilts

2  - I Spy quilts

Wesleyan Native American Ministry

1  - Crazy quilt

3 - I Spy quilts

1 - Snug Society Uni-block quilt (Feb. Lover's Knot)

Total so far for 2008 - 9

Woohoo Thanks Connie.

Abbigail, there are usually photos of the quilts in their perspective threads, and if you go to albums, you will find pictures of the quilts to. Albums is at the very tip top of the screen, in the brown letterhead.

WOW!!! WTG Miki and all you other angels that contributed to these quilts. Miki will send the Harmony Home quilts to me so I can deliver them in person and the WNAM quilts to Sandy so she can do the same.

Here's the pics of the two Sweet Child's quilts from January that I will be delivering.

Hopefully there's a picture of the Jan Crazy Scrap Quilt (and some of the quilting) that was sent to WNAM (my brother Larry took it with him Sunday, April 20).  Beautiful work gals!              Sandy

Abbigail both of our charities will be giving the quilts to the people they serve. We want them to belong to someone special that really needs them, or at least needs the love they represent.

Miki the two I Spy quilts for Harmony Home arrived yest safe and sound.   Thanks for getting them here so quickly.

What a fabulous thread you started Nawma!!!!

Sandy, do you know if your brother took any pics when he delivered the quilt? That would be neat to have up here.

Nawma, get some pics dropping them off to Harmony Home too, I want to see! I am so jealous that you guys get to actually deliver them, oh, chilly bumps again!

Way to go Snug Society!!

I delivered four quilts to Harmony Home this morning and my niece who works there was thrilled. She said they will let the children pick the quilt that they want and then she will send us a little note about each quilt as it gets picked. She said she is in need of a few smaller quilts for the babies, and lots of twin size for the teens they deal with. So I think I will try to concentrate on twin size with the Crazy Scrap blocks for awhile to get some twin sizes in their quilt stash.

Anyway, here's a couple of pics of Shawndee standing on the porch of the Harmony Home Playhouse holding our quilts. She was extremely impressed with the quilts and the fact that we have blocks from England, Canada, Australia, and the US in them.

WTG!!!! Snug Society!!!

Jess, Today Larry said he gave the Jan Crazy Patch Quilt to George Naley to deliver, and he hasn't given it out yet.  Larry assured me that George would take a picture when it's delivered.   I was hoping to get out there this coming weekend, but they're predicting another snow storm, so might not travel in that.  The Feb Lover's Knot has just the binding and label to be finished.  Have to work tomorrow, but will get to it on Fri.

So wonderful to see the Harmony Home playhouse and your niece, Connie.  Glad the quilts are being used!

Sorry, with the price of gas now, I won't be traveling to Rapid City after all.  It's about 300 miles.  The finished quilts were sent to my brother to be delivered to WNAM.  He said Arlene has the Jan Crazy patch and he thought she might be able to get a picture of the class of students from which the recipient will be picked.  The ones sent in the mail today are the two "Bugs" quilts (a baby sized and a toddler sized), the "Flannel" twin sized, and the Feb "Lover's Knot" regular sized.  Thanks everyone for your hard work on these.    I'm sure they will be appreciated!

Hi Sandy -

That is completely understandable about the gas prices. I am sorry though, I know you were looking forward to going!

I am a bit confused about Arlene giving the quilt to a student in one of the classes. We spoke to her before, and she said she would send them out to a Minister that works with some of the Native American's in extreme poverty, and the quilts would be delivered to those most in need. She said that the students that attend the school are not generally those most in need - we actually specifically requested that they not be used as prizes in the school. Mom is going to give her a call tomorrow - we want to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Hmmmm...

I called WNAM this morning. I wasn't able to speak to Arlene but the lady I did speak with took my info if they need to contact me. I spoke with her about the quilts going out to the reservation rather than being used as prizes in the school. She said she understands and that while some of the children attending the school are in fact living in the same level of poverty that the families on the reservation endure that if we wish for the quilts to go to the reservation then that is what they will do. She was very kind and I think that from now on everyone will be on the same page.

No problem Sandy. I think it is all straight now.

I got a letter from Arlene yest. with two notes included from two girls that received quilts from the BCAUS project from Block Central. She included a pic of the girls and I will get the pic and the notes scanned and posted here after my trip to the nursing home tomorrow.

The letter also included a note that the WNAM project is no longer going to support the school there where Arlene works. It does appear as if they have another location option to move their school to so I am praying that all works out for this extremely dedicated group of people, and the children that so desperately need their help.

Sandy if you would like to give us another address for your brother or for George that we could send quilts to then you wouldn't have to mail them from your place. I have the address for Arlene but feel we might be better served to send them directly to the reservation or at least to George.

Hi,  The quilts were delivered!!    Plus I sent the part of your message (about mailing quilts directly to WNAM) to Larry, and here's what he replied on May 21:

Sandy,   I got the quilts on Saturday. I took the quilts into WNAM on Monday. George was there and they had just gotten a call from Connie. She had told them that they would appreciate it if the quilts went to the reservation. George was scheduled to go down on Tuesday. He was going to take them to a Native American pastor, Kate Kindle, and she was going to see to it that they went to some of the neediest families. The address that they have for Arlene should be the same as Wesleyan Native American Ministries (WNAM). That may be the simplest way to handle the distribution is to send them to WNAM with instructions to send digital pictures to an email address. I asked George to take some pictures of all of the quilts that have been sent through us and send them to me by email and then I will send to you.    I am going to copy this to George and then he can answer the question about the address.     Larry

So far, George hasn't gotten back to me.    Sandy

Thank you so much Sandy for that info. It's great to know that the quilts will soon be in the hands of those who need them most. Everyone involved in this project has been more than generous with their time and efforts to make this all come together. Please tell Larry and ask him to pass it on to George that we are all extremely grateful for their efforts not only with our quilts but with everything they do for those that need them. We can certainly send the quilts to the address that we already have for WNAM and I know they will soon be in the hands of the intended recipients!!!

And Sandy, I would like to say once again how very grateful we all are for your work on these quilts and your continued support for this project!!! You ROCK DARLIN!!!!

Yes, Miki these quilts were sent as part of a Block Central project. The quilt on the left is a panel that I had and Jess quilted for the project, and on the right is a quilt top I made from Happy Blocks swapped on BC. (Jess did the quilting on this one too.)  These girls earned these quilts as prizes for school work of some kind.

It definitely rejuvenates my efforts to see these stories and pics as this is what we all strive for; putting these quilts in the hands of people who really need them. I am going to start a new album for these pics as it won't be long before we have more to add.

Our total for quilts delivered now sits at NINE ladies!!! WTG!!!! (These two quilts given to Sundance and Demaris do not count toward our totals as they were made for another project.)

Thanks for the kudos Connie, but you made me blush when I read what you wrote!!  It takes a whole team to create this many quilts and good leaders / captains / cheerleaders like you, Jess, and Cindy to keep everything straight and keeping us all in line.

So A BIG THANK YOU RIGHT BACK AT YOU FOR GETTING THIS PROJECT STARTED AND KEEPING IT GOING!!!  It's fun and well worth every effort.

Donna - I received 3 very beautiful quilts from you today!! I got them out in the post office so the lady that works the counter there could oooo and aaaa too... I thought she wasn't going to let me out of there with them!! They are fabulous and your quilting is stunning! I will take some pics before sending them.

By the way folks, we are getting ready to send a big shipment to the Native Americans and to Harmony Home. We have a new contact for the Native Americans (Sandy found him, and he is going to deliver right to the needy families) and we will start sending the quilts directly to my cousin at Harmony Home. I have a bunch here to send, so if you have some to send too, PM or e-mail me for the addy's or send them to me.

Don't forget, we are in short supply of quilter volunteers for the fall. If you have the means to quilt some of these, let us know. I can provide backing and possibly batting for anyone willing to quilt 'em. My LQS has sold the machine they were renting time on, and so I will not be able to take on the bigger quilts. I have a few smaller ones here that I am going to work on with my home machine.

This email and picture came today from Alexis.  Sounds like those quilts got to Pine Ridge just in time.  There's a blizzard forecast for SD tonight, tomorrow, and Fri.  Thank you all who have contributed!!  Sandy

Dear quilters,

Below is a photo I took of Maxine BrokenNose and her two daughters receiving 3 of your quilts that you gave to 555 Whiteclay, Nb. Lakota Crafters group to distribute. I am on the board of the Lakota Crafters Coop led by Bruce Bonfluer.  Maxine has 8 children so these quilts were not only a treasured item but a needed item.  Thank you for your labors of love, it sure came thru in these works of art.   Alexis Wilson

That is wonderful Sandy!! Thanks so much for posting this for us all to see.

Jess and I both received the following email from my niece at Harmony Home this week and I thought you ladies would like to read it as well.

Hey guysI just wanted to let you know we have received 4 more quilts in the mail.  We are truly thankful you guys are doing this for usas a matter of fact we have decided to make our toy closet (where kids can get a toy after they are interviewed) to a blanket closet.  We think this would be more comforting to the children, so if you guys have any other type of blankets someone would be willing to donate, we would really appreciate it!  I was supposed to let the ladies know that we received the blankets, but do not know how to get in touch with them.  Could you please email your group and let them know that they did get here, and please remind them that I cannot send them a picture of the kids with the blankets, but I do have an ideaI think I am going to photograph them in different rooms of the center, so they also get to know the program and what it looks like.  I may even take them with staff and give a little blurb of what the staff members do that helps the kids, and maybe what the meaning of the  quilts are to them.

Thanks and I love you guys, and we are looking forward to getting some more quilts in.  They are truly beautiful pieces of artwork and are very special to us and the kids.

P.S.  I can try to keep up with who got the quilts from the closet, and I may send you a write-up of the child and what they were going through.

So glad the quilts got there.  Thanks to you and Shawndee for letting us all know.  It really would be nice if she could take pictures of the rooms and let us all know more about the kids.  Thanks again Connie!           Sandy

Connie-

Thank you for letting us know that the quilts arrived. I was a little worried about the 2 that I sent. I guess I should have at least put my email address in the box so she could have let me know they got there.

I hand delivered four more quilts to Harmony Home this afternoon. Shawndee showed me around a bit more and talked to me about what the quilts mean to the children they help there.

I delivered the beautiful star quilt that Sandy did the gorgeous quilting on, the little quilt with Mary's animal blocks that Miki so gratiously quilted for us, and two precious kitty quilts that Donna was generous enough to quilt for us. They are all stunning quilts and Shawndee told me she knows a young lady she wants to have the star quilt right away. She said it is a horrible situation and the quilt will mean a lot to this young girl.

Jami had asked me if they could use any baby quilts and sadly enough they can. They not only need them for clients but they will use them in the playhouse for the little girls to play dolls with. She said any type of blanket would be well appreciated as they want each of the children to get one. She showed me one of their interview rooms and one of our little John Deere quilts was spread across the back of the little couch. The kids can cuddle under it while they go thru the interview process and then pick one of the other quilts from "quilt closet".

Shawndee wanted me to pass on the sincere appreciation from the entire staff at Harmony Home and promised some pics soon of the quilts in different rooms and with some of the staff. I told her how much you ladies have enjoyed making these quilts and she teared up a bit and told me that there are no words to express what these hand made items of love and comfort mean to the precious little souls they see at Harmony Home.

WELL DONE SNUG SOCIETY!!!!!!

Connie

I am mailing 2 I spy quilts today to our Contact in White Clay NE. One quilt is from the September blocks. It measures 49x49 and the other from October.  It measures 56x56. Both of these quilts are backed with flannel and very warm I felt they would be put to great use in the NE weather.

the pictures of these quilts are in the I spy threads.

Congratulations everyone it looks like we have finished and delivered 16 I spy quilts.

Hi Moderators,

Do you have a list of the quilts delivered for your charities this year? If not, we can try to get a good summary from the threads. I want to post about it in the newsletter. I know our success in 2008 is going to drum up support for the project in 2009!! Way to go everyone!

I just received the following email from my niece at Harmony Home. I am so excited to be able to share it with you ladies and I know it will touch your hearts as it has touched mine.

Good morning!  I just thought I would share a story with your group about one of the quilts you guys made.

Sarah first came to Harmony Home about 2 years ago.  She is 17 now, and is severely MR.  Her mothers best friend had been abusing Sarah for about a year when she finally told someone.  Sarah has been with us for counseling ever since.  About 1 year ago, her mother called us and told us she had stomach cancer.  She is doing fine now, with a lot of trips to Dallas in her future, and is slowly recovering from her abuse.  Last Monday, her mother called again to let us know she lost her house to arson.  Almost everything in the house was destroyed.  Sarah was very sad when she came in to see us because she had lost everything in her room.  We gave Sarah a quilt to take with her and she just started crying.  She kept asking I can keep this?  I get to take this home with me?  She was very grateful for the quilt, and we were thankful that we had something so beautiful to give her.

I cant tell you how much these blankets mean to these hurting children, and to us.  We are very thankful for your group.  You are truly a blessing to us.  Thank you for all you do.

I hate that there are people who have to suffer and I wish I could do more, but this story is the best Christmas gift I will receive this year.  It seems like such a small thing we are doing I am flying that we were able to give someone comfort when it was definitely needed.   Merry Christmas Snug Society,  well done.

Thank you for sharing that story with us Connie. I'm so sorry for Sarah, and will keep her in my prayers. I'm so glad to 'see' that our quilts are touching someones hearts though.

Yes, Harmony home has to still be on our to-do list for next year.

Hey everyone, I got an email note from Bruce BonFleur (our contact at White Clay, NE) and he included pictures!  Am hoping to attach them here, but first here's a copy of his note:

Sandy, Just finished a different email to you and then accidently erased it!
What it said basically was.....  Got your phone call at home the other day.... did email you back months ago after we hosted an 'honoring ceremony' at 555 (last fall)... Never heard back from you, assuming that you got it.... so, here goes some photos we hope you can use to share with the quilters.... includes local Lakota leaders (tribal chief, Oliver Red Cloud, in wheel chair; other community and agency heads/servants; lady pastor and single moms)... Norma Blacksmith (Lakota Christian Elder/member of our Board) is taking the most recent quilts (3) that we received recently to the Cohen Home for Elderly, Pine Ridge.  Will forward you photos of those also.  Watch attachment with this email and following emails.  THANKS again for all you do, blessings to the quilters/givers, until later, His Peace, Bruce
(BonFleur)
These pictures touched my heart.  Hope you all have a great day.             Sandy

all you ladies that have gone above and beyond yourselves to provide these quilts made by loving hands and with loving hearts - i can never get over the fact that i am associated with such a wonderful group!!  thank YOU!!!!!

My schedule finally cooincided with Bruce BonFleur's so we could speak on the phone.  He said they used some of our quilts in a "Blessing Ceremony" last spring.  A Native American pastor, Tom Bee, gave the blessings.  Some of the quilts we sent to the Pine Ridge Natives were given to Mom's of children 1 year old or less.  You can see some of the quilts layed out on the stage if you watch this youtube presentation.  They show up at about 4:20 through 6:30.  (Put your curser or arrow or pointer thingy on the dot moving at the bottom of the picture while the video is playing and you'll see the numbers.)  It's about half way through the video.

Bruce said he only has 1 quilt left to give out now.  Colder weather is coming, so I guess I'll get busy and finish up some of the ones I've got going.  :)  Here's the youtube site:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHPY_kvPbRk   Thanks for all you do!!   Sandy

hey y'all!!  i got an email from sandy - she has mailed quilts to Harmony Home and to Operation First Response!  i have received the email confirmation from te USPS that harmony home received the sweet child quilts that were mailed.  still waiting on the delivery confirm for the OFR quilts.  now i have to confess that i don't know which months were mailed that info is in the email at home and i am at work - but i'll try to get that posted tonight!  in the meantime, i believe sandy snapped pics of the finished quilts and will hopefully find her camera and send the pics to me or get them posted, so keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer that sandy locates her camera!
