 Star Banner QOV       71" x 92"

This Quilt of Valor is going to Sgt. Richard “Craig” Farrar  He served from 1974-1980 in Okinawa, Japan.

Craig is a third generation Army man! His grandfather, RC Farrar Sr. served in 3 different campaigns during WW I and was even shot! His father RC Farrar Jr. served from 1944-1946 as a T5 Tech Sergeant in Europe during WW II.

His family has been recognized by local newspapers for their loyal service to our country!

Craig has been nominated for this quilt by Sherry Watson.

This layout is set up so that 25 dark blue stars will float on a unified solid background.   A single member will supply all block makers and the piecer with the white needed to complete their blocks.  The white being used is Michael Miller's "Soft White", which is not as bright as some whites, but it's not yellow either.

Please make sure that your star blocks measure 8 1/2" and that your points will not be cut off when pieced together in the quilt.   Here is the link to the block tutorial for the Sawtooth Star block.

http://www.heyquilty.com/content_downloads/BAGG_Sawtooth.pdf

(Remember to use the instructions for the 8" finished star)

Choose from dark and navy blue prints, that read as more blue than any other color when you look at it from a distance.   small textured prints, tone on tones, dark blue background patriotic prints... etc.

If each person sending components will send a dollar or two along with their blocks, it will help with the cost of postage from the piecer to the quilter and the finished quilt to the final recipient.

Here is what we need to make this beautiful quilt for a well deserving veteran. Since we have 3 more nominations in the works, I'd like to get this one started and on it's way.  Let's have all blocks and top components sent to the person who signs up to piece the top by March 31, 2016.  That gives us 8 weeks to fit this into our schedule and get them mailed.

We need:

** 24 Sawtooth Star blocks   (unfinished 8 ½”    finished  8”)

Scrappy Dark blues    and     Solid White

If you need me to do more blocks just send the extra white fabric and let me know. I do have a lot of dark blue fabrics that I can use. (Don't we all? LOL!)

Thanks everybody for your help so far on this quilt top!

I also want to say that I plan to do some of these blocks too, Denise but I will let you know how many when I get through with the family! I want to get Craig's wife and 2 daughters do one so they can have a connection with the quilt! Maybe even his granddaughter! I need to ask them first though! They don't sew so it would be a tutorial Saturday when I could get them all together and get it done! I think it would make it even more special to him with their contribution!

Sherry,  Great idea regarding family working on blocks.   How about I send you enough of the white for 4 or 5 blocks and then you'll have it on hand if you get everyone together.

I've been quilting a baby quilt this week, and that requires covering my cutting mat.  I got it done enough tonite that I can move it.  I will be cutting and addressing white fabric this weekend and will mail on Monday next week to those who have already signed up.

Denise, I hope you sent more white fabric to me as well.  Doesn't look like many have signed up for blocks.

Cant guarantee my star points well enough for doing with special white fabric so will have to pass on the blocks.

<p>Great news! I am going to be Cutting the white fabric to go out to star makers this next Tuesday (after the holiday). If we each make 4 blocks (those that have signed up) we have all our blocks. I have an offer (annonymously) from someone here in Oregon that will donate backing fabric and batting! We still need a piecer, and a quilter, as well as our presentation case.    Since I am a paid member of QOV, I can request a long arm quilter to quilt the top if noone steps up to volunteer. The issue with that is I don't have any say on the time frame of how quickly it gets quilted, since these are all volunteers I don't have any control of.</p><p>Trish... instead of your $ going to part of the backing, we can use it to help with the cost of shipping.   The backing that is being donated is a wide back, I believe in either a cream, or white, or medium blue... but I'm not positive.  This is someone from my local guild that saw our facebook post.  She approached me at Guild meeting Monday evening.  </p>

Denise, I will piece and/or quilt it. It's less postage if the piecer is also the quilter, but if someone else wants to do one or the other I'm okay with that, or with doing both.

addresses on envelopes....  white fabric going out today to:

 Jami

Sandy

 Barb (bobtail cat

 Midge

 Sherry

Following the linked instructions, I made my four blocks with 7"  x WOF.   had a few  squares left over.   I am sending everyone 8"  so you have a smidgen of wiggle room .  Let me know if you need more for some reason.

Donna... I will cut the fabric for the white triangles for setting  and mail it when I mail my squares, and the backing and batting... all together in one package.   I will see the gal who is donating the back and batting in a couple of weeks for a quilt show meeting.    my blocks are made, so I should be able to mail them by end of the first week in March.

Donna...

when I sent the white fabric out yesterday,  I included a post it note with your address for the block makers.

Do you want to cut the setting triangles out of yardage?  or would you prefer for me to cut them.... Doesn't matter to me,  but if I was piecing,  I would prefer to do my own cutting, so I could fudge a smidge if needed....

Thanks again for stepping up to help on a worthy project for our service men and women....

Trish...

Send it all to me.... since I'll have a package going anyway....   I'll send you PM with my address.

Whatever is left of the money will go with the backing and batting for Donna to use to ship the quilt to Sherry.

We had red in the picture.... but maybe a blue.... so that there aren't so many reds on the front?

I'll let Sherry interject here....      she posted a picture of the red star fabric being used at the top for Dorian to use as a reference the other day....

Thanks denise,

Im partial to a blue, think it would frame it nicely and set off the stars well,

like a dark royal blue as opposed to a bright royal.....?

What do you think sherry?

Once i get it , shouldnt take too long to reach you denise, four- five hour drive hehe.

Sounds great, Donna!

My EQ7 software says they should be cut at about 6 5/8" squares, cut once on the diagonal.... An easy angle ruler would save some on the extra dog ear...

but I would probably cut them at 6 3/4" or slightly larger,  and trim down to a uniform size.

At least with the stars on point, we won't lose any points... LOL

EQ says 1 7/8 yards for setting triangles,  but I'll send 2 1/4 yards just because.   That will give you an extra 7" wof cut in case you need it.

I really do love this Michael Miller Couture line... it's much finer than Kona cotton,  or even the standard Michael Miller solid line.  I purchased the standard Michael Miller "jet black" for one project,  and the "Couture" black or another, and couldn't believe the difference.

I purchased an entire bolt of this "soft white"  at Fabric Depot and got it at wholesale price when I made my sister's wedding quilt  last year.

Still have some kona white and some "ultra white" (very bright white) so you'll all notice that I've written on the selvedge edge what it is..... makes it so much easier to do this when I bring it home.

Post office says that you should all be receiving your white by Tues this next week.  If you don't receive it by end of the week please let me know.

In answer to Jami's question about pre=washing... No.. I did not prewash the white. (which is weird, because I normally pre=wash everything), but since the largest white piece in each block is only 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 " I would not expect a lot of shrinkage. I have a bolt of this fabric, and simply cut off what I needed when I packaged them up.

Sorry Jami, is it the white you're looking for?  My left overs are not 2.5" wide.  Perhaps Denise has more she could send you?  Good luck!

Yes, I need a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle and a 2 1/2" square in the white that was sent for the background.
Anyone have that left over from cutting theirs out?

Sorry to delay,
Will try to post it on Monday, so long as there is power in town chance it may go out again tonight.
Went to Three shops, including joann's, and not finding the color of blue i wanted. Got a royal
That is just a bit brighter then envisioned but its best i could find. Others were too dark navy or
More purple blue. Fabric sources are 30- 45 minutes away so not an everyday stop 😊

Denise-
Midge is sending me her leftovers. I was short one rectangle and one square. I was very careful when I cut but just couldn't squeeze out those last 2 pieces. As soon as I get the fabric I will get the blocks sewn and in the mail.

I just went through all the packages I've received and I have batting, blue print for backing, red print for the border, white for the setting triangles (is some for the top banner, too?), solid blue (is it for the top banner?) and twenty star blocks.

Looks like I still need four more stars and patriotic print for the top banner. The main page says Sherry is binding it; does Sherry have the binding fabric, or do I send along some of what I have?

Thanks, ladies!

Donna...

The blue solid is the binding... it needs to go to Sherry when you finish quilting...

The fabrics for the top banner are coming from Sherry.... along with 4 stars.... did you get anything from her yet?

I realize I forgot to include the Label.. so I will send it to Sherry to stitch on....

Hi, all...I'm sorry I haven't gotten started on this quilt yet. I seem to have lost a couple of weekends due to my mom's passing! Anyway, this weekend we'll be getting ready for our trip and the next weekend we'll be away. So...

I PROMISE I will start assembling this quilt the weekend of June 25-26! I will have it on its way no later than mid-July.

Love you all!

Hello, everyone! I finished piecing this quilt a few weeks ago. It looks really good!

I can't quilt it right now because my dining room (the room with the quilting frame LOL) is full of stuff from my Mom's house. It will all go to my brother eventually, but I don't know when.

Sherry, would you like me to send everything to you or someone else to quilt? I did piece the backing, so it's ready to go. Otherwise I will still plan to quilt it when I can get to the machine again. (Hopefully next month!) Just let me know.

Donna, I know that Sherry has been sick, and may not be on the forum... she posted on facebook today that she had had a fever for 5 days.... I would defer to her on this.... so I guess we should just wait. Unless, someone wants to step up to do the quilting... unfortunately, I am unable to do it right now....

I'm so sorry I have been out of pocket for so long! I have been sick for 3 weeks and am still coughing my head off! I am in no way rushing you to get this quilt done. If you don't mind just keeping it and quilting it when you have time Donna, that's fine with me! I still need to make a presentation case for it too, so no stress!
Thanks again ladies!

Sherry.... I know the feeling... I'm on the end of week 2 of bronchitis!  Getting really tired of it!   chest x ray came back clear of pneumonia,  but that meant no antibiotics.....  I'm supposed to fight it off on my own.....

Oh, gosh, ladies- I sure hope you both feel better soon!

Sherry, I'm planning to load the quilt on the frame today. Last weekend I made myself go through all the fabric and supplies from my Mom's house. I only kept a small pile for myself, and kept at it until everything was put away. So now I have my sewing room and my quilting room back! We ended up with seven (7!) 24" cube boxes full of stuff to donate. And Mark thought I had a lot of fabric! LOL

Sorry I never posted that I got it but life here has been crazy! Removing our old shop and rebuilding a new one that will have my sewing room in it. A two week vacation and work all seems to be getting in the way! Anyway, I'm still waiting on a label so that I can present it to Craig. Thanks for all your help! It turned out great!
