Hi Everyone! I will be hosting a block exchange and will need a co-hostess. Anyone interested? Here's how the exchange will work. We will be grouped into groups of 6 quilters. Each member of the group will chose a 12 1/2 inch pieced block pattern. and color scheme or theme, ie: reds with white backgrounds and pm to me. Each month I will reveal the pattern and you will make 6 blocks. You will keep one block and send the other 5 to me with a self-addressed stamped envelope. I will send back to you 5 blocks, one made by each member of your group. Sounds like fun doesn't it????? These six blocks can be made into small crib quilts to give as gifts or to donate to charity. Use a 2 1/2" sashing and first border from a coordinating fabic. Then a 1" inner border. And a 3 1/2" outer border. This works up to a 36" x 50" quilt. If you are interested in participating let me know by 9-15-12. We will officially start the exchange on Oct. 1st with the first mailing to me on the 30th. Then we will continue to mail on the 30th of each month. I will let you know the new block on the 25th of each month. This will be a six month exchange.

denise, these look like duplicate threads - but i've emailed cherie so she can let me know if one needs to be deleted.

i'm curious to know about the color "requirements" too . . . this could be fun

Ok, sorry for the confusion. I guess I posted this twice without knowing it and only edited one of them.

As for color requirements, here is how it would work. Your block choice for the month is Yankee Puzzle. You want group members to make them in blues with white background. So, the main parts of the block would be in blue (the puzzle design), the color blue chosen by each individual group member from her stash. The backgound would be white fabric, usually white-on-white print or a tonal.

Let's say your block that month is Ohio Star and the color combo is white with red background. Each member would chose a white-on-white/tonal print from her stash for the star and a red print for the background pieces.

I participated in one of these years ago and I really had a great time making the blocks and receiving the blocks. It was really interesting to see what prints and colors each lady chose.

Cherie - I would love to join in  this sounds like lots of fun!

My only concern is posting from my side of the water: postage will be fine I think, I will send you $$$ with my envelope, the problem could be in the time it takes for packages to reach you, I would hate to be responsible for holding up the swap.

Let me know what you think (and everybody else too please). I will not be offended if you decide it better if I opt out of this one, I can still follow and enjoy from the sidelines.

Cheerio for now,

Sue x

Sue, I think if you mail by the 25th instead of the 30th, it should be fine.

I haven't seen any problems with mail from your country. I know that Milica has a devil of a time, tho.

Please, join us. We will just play it by ear.

We don't have to have a top finished in one month, right?  Can just save up the beautiful blocks from our friends to use at another time, right???      Oct through Dec are my "rushing to finish those last minute items" , so I was on the fence about this exchange.  I've thought about it and thought about it and think I can do it too...    It sounds like so much fun. Please add my name to your list.

Come on, Sherry!    remember all 6 of your blocks each month could be exactly the same.... (or scrappy if you have smaller pieces in your stash)... just need to fit the color theme for the month.

Glad everyone else is starting to sign up......

  • Cherie
  • Cindy
  • Denise
  • Sandy
  • Sue
  • Sherry?  (remind  KEEP BUGGING her later.....  )

We can have more than one group of 6... so come on everyone!  you know you want to!

Cherie... I have a question... since everyone chooses their colors and the block pattern before we start.... can we draw each month's  person and choice at the very beginning of the swap?  Then some could work on their blocks ahead of time so that they are ready to mail when that month rolls around?   (We did this for a swap over at BC before it folded... and it was nice to know what was coming up.... and to be able to plan around other committments)

Yay! We now have enough for one group If we get another six, I will mix them up and choose the groups.

Yes, Denise, we can pick the blocks at the beginning of the swap if that will make it easier for everyone. The group I was in several years ago posted the new block at the beginning of each month. I do recall that it did make it a little hectic, especially if I didn't have the colors involved.

Everyone needs to pm me their block choice and color schemes when they sign up. Quilters Cache is a great site to choose blocks from.

Please, please make sure that when you make your blocks they are 12 1/2 inches unfinished. I have been working with some of my blocks from a few years ago and some are 11, 11 1/2, 12, 12 1/2, 13. It is sooooo frustrating trying to put them together.

So............who else wants to play???? Dorian, Pat, Tricia........

Cherie.... about those odd sized blocks....

Here is what I do..... (not saying by any means that it is ok to send blocks that aren't right)..... but the corbett trio #3 quilt that I just finished had blocks of many sizes..... I framed each block with a 3" sashing or frame,  and then trimmed them down to be all the same size.    I have also done a contrasting fabric the same way... if they are close,  I cut them straight,  but if they are really offsize as a group,  I twist my ruler a bit and cut them so that they sit wobbly in the  block.  this way the difference in sizes is hidden from the eye.

Here is another way....I frame each block with a smaller border and just square them all up to the same size...

If you look closely at the small solid brown frame on these blocks, you will notice that one is different size than the others... but the sashing is consistent on all.   The lower left block was larger than the rest... somewhere in the quilt, there are a couple with wider brown frames.....

I really need to get this one quilted...

Denise - thanks for the help on odd-sized blocks. I never thought of tipping them!! The blocks I was working with was the churn dash and I had 3 twelve inch and 3 twelve 1/2 inch. I just cut the 3 twelve 1/2 in down to 12 inches. Needless to say, those three lost their points!!!!!

Girls, I have updated my first posting with the sign-ups and blocks. Sandy, Sue & Sherry please pm your block choice to me.

I am really excited about this block exchange I hope every one else is too. Come on everyone. Join in.

Cherie- I would love to join (Am I the 'Sue' on the list already? )

Like everybody else, as Christmas looms on the horizon everything gets hectic but I'm pretty sure I'll get the blocks done, so long as everyone is aware and okay with possible postal delays in the run-up to Christmas.

I'm really looking forward to this

I'm thinking, I'm thinking... So many blocks, it's hard to choose.  Will it matter if the block I choose is similar to or the same as what the others have chosen?  Most of the blocks I make are usually simple and uncomplicated...does that matter to anyone?

PM coming your way...

sandy, at the moment, cherie is the only one who knows what blocks have been selected!  mine was fairly simple (i'll give you a hint - we made the block once for one of the snug uniblocks  ) so i can certainly say that i'm all for simple & uncomplicated blocks   i would think the only problem would come if you happened to choose a block that someone else has chosen, but really with all the many block choices out there, what are the chances? you could always choose Option B as a backup while you're choosing Option A

This looks like you gals are going to have so much fun! Do you want me to mention it in the newsletter, blog, facebook, etc. areas for Q&N and see if we can get some new members to participate? I know that sometimes new members are awesome, and other times they make folks nervous, so I won't do it unless you ladies want me to.

Have fun!

Jess, yes, that would be great. I did mention it on the "quiltin" page on facebook but so far, no takers.

Prairiegal, I answered your pm and hope you will join up. Trust me, it will be fun.

I had a thought, and will let you all decide. What would you think about making a 7th block that I will keep and make into quilts to send Harmony House. It's just a thought and I will abide by the general consensus.

May I make a suggestion? If we have 2 groups that we give Guoup A a name Like Scrappy Head and Group B Nimble Thread so we know which people are in each group.  Or give each group their own thread to communicate better. When we did birthday swaps years ago it made it much easier to find your group to keep updated. And if anyone is interested I could run a birthday swap for next year.

p.s. count me in too.

I choose the Deprssion Block from Quilters Cache in scrappy colors.

I am feeling sew tempted to join in here ...

Am I reading correctly that we will have all the patterns and color choices for our group at the start of the exchange and will not have to wait until each month to find out what we need to send that month?   The holidays are always so busy that I would definately need to make those months ahead of time.  I did this with the string blocks on BC and had them all in envelopes ready to send each month and that worked well for me.

Hmmmmmmmmmm ...   Pat

Hi Everyone,

I hope all is well with everyone's life and having a good summer. As we close for summer and prepare for fall, the block swap is a great idea.

I, too participated in the same block exchange as Cherie. I was sent some wonderful blocks with great colors. It's really a lot of fun !!! You get 6 blocks that work into a really fast top that works well for any charity or gift. It's fun to see the color waves everyone picks and the blocks you receive. When Cherie and I would get the packages in the mail, we would try to get together to see our treasures we received. It was so exciting !!!

I used my blocks for a charity event for a friend who had cancer. I wrote just the first name of the person who made the block on the corner of each block on the top so they could get credit for making the block. Even though no one knew any of theses ladies, I still wanted them to get credit for their beautiful work. Then I took several fabric markers with me and everyone at the event wrote a special message on the back to him.

I received a letter from his family with pictures of the front of the quilt and then several of the back with all the special messages written by his family and friends He used the quilt in the hospital and he told his family he felt truly loved by all the messages written.

Those blocks made in our swap and the messages wrote touched his life and his family forever. While he did loose his battle. His family has that quilt that will always remind them of their loved one, made by very special people. We call them "Quilter's".

I will pick my block and colors and PM you Cherie. I too, will made 7 to donate for the charity quilt

Gina

P.S. If you need help I'm right next door LOL!!

Cherie

I would love to be part of this if you will all have me.  I too like the idea of knowing whats ahead so that I can get things made way in advance.  I have just recently bought a lot of christmas fabrics ready to start making those chrissie pressies in plenty of time so will probably be sewing several nights a week now - would you believe Costco over here have all their Christmas decorations and gifts in already!!!!  I just want to know what's happened to Summer this years let alone start Christmas - lol

I have updated the first post. We now have 12 players!!!! Woohoo

I know everyone is anxious to get started so here is a suggestion. Get started on making the block you have chosen in the colors you picked. This way you will be ahead!!!!!

I will be posting the groups and block colors on the 20th. I know I can't wait, that for sure!

Sign-ups are open til Sept. 15th so, come on girls, we can get one more group of six. You know you want to play with us

Well, I haven't done a block swap in a long time, so I think I'd like to! I'm not sure I understand how it works, though. Do we pick a different block for each month?

Can I still sign up? I like the prairie queen block from Quilters Cache.

Donna, I have you down!!!!!! Each person picks a block with a color way, ie: Ohio Star block, reds with white TOT background. Then each month we will make a different block. I will be posting the list of names for each group and the block choices with the colors to be made each month on Sept. 20th.

Please pm me your color choices.

In the meantime, if you want to get started make the block you have picked in the colors you have chosen. When the month your block will be made you will already be done!!!

Sally, are you saying yes????

Hi again

Okay maybe it was the fall or ???????? I thought we were making the blocks in everyone's colour........

Example My block is a star so lets say my colour is reds then the other 6 are purples - blue & yellow _ green & gold etc....
are we suppose to make them in their colour choice ?????

OR

They will be getting my block in my colours ?????

a little confused

Hugs and stitches

debbieann, if i understood things correctly:

month #1, everyone in my group will be making the block pattern i chose in the colors i chose

month #2, everyone will make member #2's block choice in her chosen colors

etc. etc. for the next 4 months

just an example of how i think this is going to work - not that my block will be done the first month for my group

so if you want to get a "jump ahead" you can make your six (7 with the extra block for harmony home) blocks of your chosen pattern in the colors you are choosing - which is exactly what i need to be doing

hope this helps!

Debbieann... if you look back on the first page of this thread, you will see a quilt that Cherie made with blocks that were all the same pattern... (A whirlygig of some sort)... and the choice of colors that month must have been monochromatic blues.....     Each month, you will have 6 blocks to make a small top that has color=coordinated blocks of the same pattern.  Add borders as desired and you have a nice little quilt.

One month may yield a quilt in yellows and blues,   another month red and white....

I  can almost guess that if you are in Cindy's group that there will be at least one month of something with purple in it!  LOL

If you want a larger quilt, I guess you could combine 2 different months' worth of blocks and blend the color choices together with  a focus fabric of some kind.

hope this clears things up a bit....

If your month is a star.... and in reds,  than you make 6 blocks (7 if doing a harmony house block).... and mail them out.  They blocks do not have to have all the same fabrics in them, as they will go to different people, they just have to have the right colors.   This is a great scrap buster!

Your month might not be until January... but since we won't know for a week or two yet,  you could get all your month's blocks done and have them ready to mail and be ahead of the game.    Probably not going to happen here.... School has started with a bang.... and we have 2 new students starting on Monday..... I've been exhausted all week.... but then sinusitis doesn't help much..... I finally went to the dr. yesterday and he prescribed a heavy duty decongestant...... hope it works!

believe it or not, denise, but i didn't specifically choose purple this time!!   altho purple would certainly be quite appropriate for my block

denise brings up a great point!  there are only color themes here - this could be a fantastic stash-buster project

Thanks, Denise, for explaining the way the swap is working.

I have been having computer issues the past day or two. It kept telling us we had a "fatal error". And I found out that my neighbors had the same problem, so it must have been our iternet provider.

Also, if you save all your blocks each month at the end you will have 36 blocks and that would make a great sampler quilt or two.

I know everyone is getting anxious. Just have a little over a week to find out!!!!!

We still need 4 people to sign up to have 3 groups. Any takers???? Come on girls, you know you want to play with us!!!

Midge,

A BIRTHDAY SWAP IS:

12 people sign up-- give birthdays- what block they would like with color- usually use Quilters Cache- Then each person in the group make her block and send it on her birthday 12 blocks made in a years time. Lots of fun Donna and I did them for years on Garden Web sometimes I was in 2 groups a year.   I would make them a head of time and just mail right before there birthday. Some people would wait till there day to open others got treats all during the month to open. I would host it and make speadsheet with names and addresess of ladies in the group with all the information.

We will be starting one Next month to Start in January.

come join us on this swap pick a block you have always wanted to do and we will make them too it will be fun

Oh, come on and join this block exchange Midge...you know you want to.        It's only 7 blocks each month if you're making the extra (7th) for Harmony Home.  You can do that!  Picking your own block is the hardest IMO...but there are all kinds of blocks to choose from on Quilter's Cache!  Take a peak and see what interests you. http://www.quilterscache.com/

Hi Ladies,

I think the groups having names was a great idea!! This is a great exchange. I think we have some wonderful blocks coming our way. The block choices and colors are wonderful.

I hope everyone in my 2 groups like the blocks I picked and the colors.

I think a lot of us were sewing half square triangles over the weekend. LOL!! With all the cutting and sewing, the end result was worth it. I finished Annie's choice in the light blue with white back group for one of my groups. It came out really nice.

I definately like the head start, especially with all the craziness that life brings.

Happy sewing everyone !! I can't wait to see my treasures when they arrive.
