It is with a heavy heart I forward this message for another group that I was in with Gerda:

I thought I would forward this email I just got from Sandi in the other yahoo
group that I belong to. My prayers go to Gerda's family.

To all of you that have prayed for Gerda, sent good thoughts and cards her
way..........

It is with deep sadness that I must tell you that Gerda passed away this
afternoon.

I am a Facebook friend with Gerda and have been watching her page. Nothing had
been posted for some time, until this evening when this message was posted by
Jennifer Decker-Vantuil (Susan and I wonder if this might be her
daughter-in-law)...........
"Good Bye Vantuil Gerda. You were loved and will be missed greatly. I feel so
lucky to have been able to know you."

I decided to send a private message to Jennifer and told her who I was, about
our Yahoo quilting group, and how we have all been praying for Gerda. I told her
how much she was "treasured" for sharing her quilt connections and projects and
her conversation. She was a "sparkle" in our group. Jennifer replied immediately
with this message........
"Hello and thank you for your message. Gerda passed away this afternoon. It is
nice to know she was loved by your group. I know how much she loved quilting.
Thank you for your thoughts."

I will send a sympathy card from our group. Even though we never met in person,
Gerda truly was a "sparkle" in this group and it was as if we knew her. She will
be deeply missed.

I haven't been here in a while, except to snoop, but it only seemed fitting that I come say goodbye here where I met her. Goodbye, Gerda. I know God's taking care of you now, but you will be missed. My prayers are with your family.

She was one of the first (and most helpful) quilting teachers and friends that helped me learn to quilt. I simply can't believe she's gone. She was such a lovely person, and I'll miss her tremendously. Prayers for all her family and friends throughout the world.

i am sitting at my desk . . . i need to work on some things . . . but my heart is soooooo very heavy right now and if my heart is this burdened, how much heavier must the burden be for gerda's family?  it is some comfort knowing that gerda is now being cradled in the loving arms of her precious Heavenly Father.  many prayers for love & comfort going up for gerda's family, bill, tanya, maya, haley, her son (sorry, i forgot her son's name ) & daughter-in-law jenny, and her brand new grandson, miles.  thank God, He allowed her life long enough to hold her long-awaited grandson . . .

gerda, you will be so very very missed by all of us here who loved you so very very much

having been on this board for only a short time, i did not know Gerda for long; but i have been blessed in that short time with her willingness to teach and to share her knowledge and skills.

she was a very generous sweet person. i will get to meet her in person someday.

my heart and prayers go out to her familiy and to her freinds here who have known her for a much longer time then have i.

i will miss her but im glad she is no longer ill and is not suffering a long drawn out decline.

till we meet in heaven Dear Gerda......

Haven't been here for some time, but had kept in touch with Gerda...so very sorry to hear she's passed. My heart is heavy right now, she was truly a great help in so many things. She will probably have a quilting group in Heaven as soon as she's settled in..

God be with her family, and bless them. Lots of hugs.

Thanks Jean, you caused a smile (which have been far and few between today)--not just s quilting group, an embroidery group too, AND she'll be teaching everyone how to find patterns on the web....Given how much pain it's causeing us, I can't really imagine what the family is going through.

PS Just a quick warning for you guys. I posted some pics I had of her with the original message. they made me cry again, so don't go look if you're not ready yet. It's just so hard to believe.
Hey Marian the Librarian, any patterns up there we haven't seen yet??? If any one can find them, it will be you.

I find it so hard to believe she is gone. So many times I think of a block or pattern that I couldn't find and Gerda was always able to find it for me. I can only imagine the loss her family must feel. My prayers go out to her family. Gerda, you are loved and missed.

7 or 8 years ago I made my very first quilt block, a nine patch. A kind quilter from Canada commented on how well my points matched and that she couldn't believe I was a newbie. A couple of years later she encouraged me to start making and publishing patterns. She was a regular member of all of my online quilty groups, a dear friend, and a teacher to me and countless others around the world. I've been describing her as our "librarian" all day, because she was better than google for finding information. "Don't google it, Gerda it," we'd say. I could go on and on about this truly awesome woman. The world is less one quilty superstar today. RIP my friend. You are sorely missed.

When I read the post this morning I just could not comment. It is finally at end of day that I am able to add that I have thought about her a lot after she took ill and could not be among us. When I was among the missing over a year ago she made contact to see how I was doing. Though I didn't get to know her as well as many of you have there is definitely a hole in her spot.
May her family be wrapped in the comfort of family and friends' arms in this very difficult time.

Thank you Sally letting us know and for posting those pictures of Gerda.  I've enjoyed having Gerda as a backup "librarian" and seeing all the quilts and projects she did.  Am so very sorry for her family.  For as much help as she's given on this forum, she must've given them even more.  Imagine her dear grand daughters will treasure the times she took to watch over them.  RIP dear Gerda.  You will be missed!  Hugs going out to her family.

oh ms pat!  i had completely forgotten about those little signature blocks . . . i bet i have one too!  usually gerda signed a seam on the back of her blocks - these were probably the only ones (as far as "swap" blocks are considered) she signed on the front!  thank you for posting the "memory"

Her obituary is online and you can leave a message in the guest book:

Hi,
How sad to hear that Gerda died.
I am not very active at the moment, but what a shame, I am mostly lurking.
Here I found a site. Maybe you will be interested.

I had the great priveledge to be Gerda's 'Friend of the Month' in August of 2009. Here's some goodies she sent me. I'm going to find any blocks she made (not already in a quilt) such as sig. block, Stocking block, maybe some Happy Blocks, my Christmas ornies and take pictures....I found the pic she took of her ornaments...

When I was rather 'new' to quilting and 'the boards', I had asked about a pattern for a quilt using CARS as the theme. I had the panel, but had no idea about companion pieces. Gerda was the first one to help me, she sent me the pattern, and I made my DGS a CARS quilt for Christmas that year. I also have the set of pillowcases from the swap a year or so ago, they are on my spare pillows, on my bed everyday; and I have the ornaments, too. I sent her a picture of the cases on my bed and 5 mins later my Boxer was curled up against them, sound asleep..lol She got a kick outa that. I have several blocks from her too.. Even tho she's not with us any longer, she will ALWAYS be with us..

Hugs and RIP dear lady.

Found my siggy blocks we swapped here plus 'My Favorite' (BC, I think), Happy Blocks (scrappyandhappy) and Stocking blocks (scrappyand happy?). More of my wealth of gifts from Gerda. I know there are others but since she signed the inside of blocks, usually, once they are in quilts it's impossible to know which are hers. I use my wee mugrug/coaster and pin cushion just about every day. I have another larger mugrug at the other sewing machine and that one rotates between the gifts I've received (currently have the one with the wee chick that Dawn made me for my cup and popsicle one from Debbieann and my flip-flops (from Cindy) are on the wall.

What a joy she was. At least I can now post about her without the tears falling.

okay guys--don't you have any pics of things you got from her (or things you sent to her?)
goodness, between BR, scrappyandhappy, smallquilttalk, quilted table, Seasons and goodness knows what else, surly there were swaps out there with really cool stuff. I can't find the 'Because She Loves Red' table topper I made for her or I'd post it, but I bet I can find more blocks from her.......

They laid our beloved Gerda to rest today so I think it only fitting that I share this with you. During one of my down moments today on a long drive home this song came on the radio and I lost it all over again cause I knew she was comforting me! I think this is what she would say to us if she could.

"When I Get Where I'm Going"

When I get where I'm going

On the far side of the sky

The first thing that I'm gonna do

Is spread my wings and fly

I'm gonna land beside a lion

And run my fingers through his mane

Or I might find out what it's like

To ride a drop of rain

Yeah when I get where I'm going

There'll be only happy tears

I will shed the sins and struggles

I have carried all these years

And I'll leave my heart wide open

I will love and have no fear

Yeah when I get where I'm going

Don't cry for me down here

I'm gonna walk with my grand daddy

And he'll match me step for step

And I'll tell him how I missed him

Every minute since he left

Then I'll hug his neck

So much pain and so much darkness

In this world we stumble through

All these questions I can't answer

So much work to do

But when I get where I'm going

And I see my maker's face

I'll stand forever in the light

Of his amazing grace

Yeah when I get where I'm going

There'll be only happy tears

Hallelujah

I will love and have no fear

When I get where I'm going

Yeah when I get where I'm going

RIP sweetest Gerda! We love you and we will always remember you! You took a piece of each of our hearts with you when you left!

Til we meet again!

Don't think of her as gone away
Her journey's just begun
Life holds so many facets
This earth is only one
Just think of her as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think how she must be wishing
That we could know, today
Now nothing but our sadness
Can really pass away
And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched
For nothing loved is ever lost
And she is loved so very much.
(Anonymous)

RIP dear gerda

Don't quite know what to say, I've just logged on after a very busy week. In tears here. My thoughts and prayers go to Gerda's family. Gerda was one in a million, such a good and loyal friend, I know we will all miss her dreadfully. but we should also remember her and smile, she brought anyone who knew her joy and her warmth of spirit came through in everything she wrote

This is the beautiful table-topper Gerda made for me a couple of years ago as part of a Secret Santa swap. Gerda knew that Red Cardinals are my favourite American bird, this pieced and quilted topper is unique. Gerda always went the extra mile for those she cared for

Someone sent me this poem when my mom died.  We printed it off and put it in a little "memories drawer" that was built into her casket.  Thought it might be appropriate to share it here.

GONE FROM MY SIGHT  by Henry Van Dyke

I am standing by the seashore.

A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze

and starts for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength,

and I stand and watch

until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud

just where the sun and sky come down to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says, ‘There she goes!

Gone where? Gone from my sight – that is all.

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar

as she was when she left my side

and just as able to bear her load of living freight

to the places of destination.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone at my side says,

‘There she goes! ‘ ,

there are other eyes watching her coming,

and other voices ready to take up the glad shout :

‘Here she comes!’
