I'm so excited to be able to head up this little quilt for Dorian!

I don't have everything figured out just yet, but as soon as I do, I'll be back!

Jami

Project Coordinator – Jami                 Project Co-Coordinator - Cindy

With the Holidays fast approaching, I'd like to suggest that we try to get all blocks and fabrics to the piecer as soon as possible. I'd really like this little quilt to be in Dorian's hands when the baby arrives!

Aunties, let’s make the http://quilting.about.com/od/babyquiltpatterns/ss/double_star.htm for this new arrival to our Q&N family! Dorian and Hubby aren’t going to find out what “flavor” this baby is…they want it to be a surprise so we are going to use gender neutral colors and prints.

Finished size is approx. 52 1/2" X 63 1/2".

To make this baby quilt, we will need the following –

20 Double Star Blocks - These blocks will be 10 ½” UN-FINISHED!!! PLEASE make sure your blocks measure this!!! It makes the Piecer’s job SO much easier!

We are using a pale-pale yellow tone on tone for the background, a medium green for the points and center square and a novelty print suitable for either a boy or girl for the other points.

Sashing – 49 – 1 ½” x 10 ½” rectangles – Minty Green tone on tone or very small print (or ¾ yard to piecer) - Sue rcvd 12/9 by CP

Inner Border – 6 – 1¼” X WOF OR  3/8 yard of Medium Yellow sent to piecer - Gerda rcvd 11/22 by CP

Outer Border – 7 – 4” X WOF strips of a Gender Neutral Novelty Print (this doesn't need to be green, it's just what I used in my EQ program) – Sherry rcvd 12/1 by CP

Would like the Cornerstones and Binding to be the same -
Cornerstones – 30 – 1 ½" Squares – Soft Orange Tone on Tone or very small print – Pat rcvd 11/29 by CP
Binding – 6 – 2 ¼” X WOF Soft Orange (Same as the Cornerstones) – Pat - rcvd 11/28 by Donna
Batting 60” X 70” – Pat
Backing Fabric 60” X 70” – Milica - rcvd 11/2 by Donna
Label – Jami (I have this on my Embroidery machine)
Piecer – Cindy (Both Quilts...Dorian's Baby Quilt & the Bonus Quilt for Harmony House)
Quilter – Donna (Dorian's Baby Quilt & Charity Bonus Quilt)

Aunties, please remember to send a couple of dollars to help with the postage costs incurred by the Piecer sending the top to our Quilter who will then send the finished quilt to Dorian and Her Hubby.

The way this pattern is sewn & cut out, you will have “extra” mirror images of the block pieces. If you would please send the extra pieces to the piecer to make the “Bonus Quilt” we can then donate it for the Charity Quilts that we do. Thanks!!

jami, i added the pic of the "Extra Units" bonus quilt from the quilting.about.com site since i was curious what it looked like and thought everyone else might be curious too!

and if you haven't already thought of this, may i suggest that we donate the bonus quilt to harmony home?  i think that would be especially appropriate since dorian is the moderator for the Sweet Child quilts

and jami, you know i'd be honored to piece both quilts

hooray to donna!!!

I think I have everyone added in so far...Thank you all for joining in!

Cindy- I didn't figure in any extra fabrics for the bonus quilt. I just thought we'd have the blocks in one place to be pieced and quilted for one of the charities. Would you like me to add those in that we need or just add to them later?

Thanks so much everyone!! If you need Cindy's address, please let us (Cindy or me) know and we will get it to you.

Hi,

It's getting near tea time and I'm hungry so forgive my addled brain! Have I got this clear?

After cutting there will be enough for another set of blocks? So an extra quilt is planned (pretty sure I got that bit right) I am signed up for the sashing, so now I send double the amount  of fabric - correct????

sue, jami hasn't figured what is needed for the bonus quilt.  there is a pic of the bonus quilt on jami's first post above - in fact i'll post the pic here again.  the leftovers are "parts" of the original block and this is the suggested layout for the bonus quilt!  we're just trying to find out if everyone wants to complete this bonus quilt now or just let the piecer hold onto the extra "parts" and we'll complete it at a later time.

I've got my blocks done!

I played around with the extras and took a couple pictures of them with different layouts.

Anyway...here are the pictures!

Jami

PS - The Extra pieces won't make the same block as what goes into Dorian's quilt. We will need to play with it to come up with a layout we like.

yay, trish!  what a treat to have an actual aunt participating in this quilt for dorian's little bundle of joy!

you've got the idea down just fine - make your blocks (let jami know how many blocks you want to make ) then mail your blocks (as well as the extra parts) to me, i will piece the top together once i receive everything, then i will mail the top to donna (msmeow) to be quilted and then donna will mail the completed quilt to dorian!  if you have any questions, please do holler!  someone will have an answer for you

i am going to send you a PM (private message) with my mailing address.

I would like them to all be different, but if you can't find anything in your stash, I'm sure Cindy can seperate them when she pieces them.

Yes, Miss Cindy is piecing the top for us.

Thanks!!

I went to the LQS that I sew for today, and looked for the pale yellow and pale orange (is that a peach?? lol) - didn't have it, so I went to the LQS here in town, she had a yellow that I think will work for the block, not sure on the orange-y - will have to check with Jami on that.

thank you thank you,

i love the blue as well, it was left over from a dress made for my dd when

she was 2 or 3, now its in her new cousins quilt    i was hoping to have enough

of the coordinating red left as well but the strips were not quiet wide enough

silly me, here is the other one.....

i thought photoshop would make it easy to resize the files, but i was WRONG.

have to go thru severel steps,

maybe i just need to learn to use it better lol.

I can send the binding strips, too, with the $$ for the batting ... :-)

... I thought that read same as cornerstones so I was not sure if it was taken care of or not ...

I have plenty of soft orange fabrics in my stash ... Pat

I missed the fact that the binding was to be the same as the cornerstones - and had signed up for that and sashing? - if one of you wants to do the binding and cornerstones so they are the same, I won't mind, truly!
Thanks if you do :)

Okay, I removed Gerda's name from the Cornerstones. So now I need to have both the Cornerstones and Binding signed up for.

Jami

PS- Cindy- do you want to use one of the labels I already sent you or would you like another one for this quilt?

Cindy-

I think we have to figure out a setting first and then see how big the blocks are...and go from there. I can play with it in EQ when we settle on a design for the block to figure out just what we are going to need for the rest.

I'll get my blocks in the mail to you in the next couple of days. Was just waiting to see what else I may need to send...just in case.

Miss Pat-

If you'd like to that would be WONDERFUL!!! This would have all the parts spoken for and we could start setting some "we'd really like blocks, etc. to Cindy by this date".

I would so love to be able to have this little quilt to Dorian and Hubby before this little one arrives! With the holidays fast approaching (   ) I don't want this lost in the shuffle of normal preparations.

Hello Everyone!

Now that all the parts are spoken for, I think we need to try to set some deadlines on when stuff needs to be mailed out.

I was kind of thinking that everyone should be able to have their parts mailed by the end of November. That will give Miss Cindy plenty of time to get this little quilt pieced and on it's way to Donna to be quilted before that little precious bundle arrives.

Once we know how many "extra" blocks are sent, we can pick out a layout and figure what is needed for the "bonus" quilt.

Thanks again for everyone helping make this extra special quilt for Dorian!!!

Jami

I got my blocks cut out and ready to sew (though I have to pull out the fabrics again to make the extras - I used QC's pattern for Hope of Hartford - much easier to figure out what to cut for one block - though I am making two). I should have them in the mail Monday.

Just want to verify.... we are sending just the extra square blocks to Cindy... (rather than making the entire star block that would spin in the opposite direction?).

I have figured out the fabric needed to make 1 block.  (there was an error in the actual cutting directions on line).

Background fabric: (yellow)  cut 2 squares 4 7/8"   PLUS   4 rectangles  2 1/2" x 4 1/2"

center and points: (green) cut 2 squares 5 1/4"  PLUS 1 square 2 1/2"

Focus print: (multi-colored) cut 4 squares 5 1/4"   (the math on the website figured out for 2 squares... and you won't have enough)

My blocks are 1/2 stitched.... will post a pic later..

YAY!! got my two blocks and the extra pieces cut and sewn today - they'll go in the mail early next week - hubby and I have some heating and gasline work to do Monday and Tuesday, so no time to go - besides that should give me time - I hope - to get a couple other things done for the mail.

The colors aren't right in the pic... the one on the right is much greener than it appears.  It really isn't teal...

Here are my blocks and my extra pieces.  (sorry I had to substitute two extra squares for the extra pieces... I really wanted to use that multi-colored bug fabric for my block, but only had enough for 2 squares.

Denise-

I think send just the individual pieces loose, don't sew them into a larger block. Once we know how many actual "blocks" we have, we can figure out a layout for them.

I'm glad to see this moving along!

Thanks Everyone!!!

Now to work on the blocks for Meg's son's quilt - hoping I have big enough pieces of these colours - I seem to have much less than I thought I did - how'd that happen??? LOL

Great! Glad they got there!
I had bought that material years ago - some of it is in Miss H's quilt top (still needs to be quilted) - I thought it highly appropriate for these.

I just went ahead and ordered a whole yard but you will need to wash it for me! Thought since I had to pay shipping, may as well send it to you instead of me and then on to you! Cindy, my 2 blocks and the 8 "extras" were in the mail Nov 18 along with a couple orphan blocks and a little $$.  Have they not arrived at your home yet???  The "yellow" was tone on tone toys, green was mottled, and the other fabric had a "toy zoo animal" print.

ms. pat, i got the cornerstones today & postage $$ too, thank you!!!  and would you believe, your cornerstones exactly match the darker "tone" in gerda's inner border strips!!

just waiting on a few more things and i can get this darling top pieced and in its way to donna!  thanks for getting everything here so quickly, aunties!!

yes'm, miss jami, that is exactly what i am saying!  i just pulled everything out and checked against post #1 and everything is accounted for!  infact, i THINK i even have 1 extra block for the "orphan" pile ROFLOL or perhaps a quick little pillow for dorian's darling . . . or maybe a bib!!!!  hmmmmm   wheels are turning . . . i did count rather quickly we'll see!!!

and i believe i have counted 75 of the bonus blocks AND sue sent lots of the pretty green border fabric, so i should have some of that to help with borders, whatever, on the bonus charity quilt . . . i'll let you know how much is leftover once i cut sashing strips.  it's looking like i will tackle this after christmas - holiday doings are piling up . . . y'all know how that goes

ummm errr, your extra "orphan" block may in fact be a correct accounting as i think i sent you three blocks

not that i cant count, just that i did two blocks the same, then realized that they were to each be different fabrics. so i ended up with three hehehehe, figureing better to have more then you need then not enough

Sometimes that "extra" block is the cushion you need to be able to piece the top together! I don't know how many times I have counted blocks and started piecing the top and found I was 1 block short! LOL!

jami, i've got the top about half-way pieced i started about mid-afternoon tuesday, got all my sashings ready, all the rows sewn with their sashings and the sashing rows with their cornerstones and got started connecting the rows.  would've continued, but somewhere down the line i got wren used to eating and she got hungry and asked what's for supper, gramma  dangit, she side-tracked me!  then i got side-tracked with mark harmon  . . . what can i say

and i did have one leftover block  i'm thinking about making a bib with it - won't that be darling!

also, i have 75 of those "bonus" blocks and some of the green sashing fabric that was from sue - forget how much of that i have left tho, a nice-sized piece tho.  after i cut the border pieces from the green "paw-print" that sherry sent, i'll let you know how much i have left of those fabrics so we can start planning the bonus quilt for harmony home.

the top is pieced!!!!       aunties, your blocks were awesome! this top is adorable! this one could be one of my faves and i can't wait to see what donna does with it  it'll be on its way to FL as soon as i get to the post office this week

jami - i have 75 of the bonus blocks - not sure why there is an odd number, but it is . . . i suppose mr. singer could've snagged one when i wasn't looking but he doesn't usually do stuff like that so.....

i also have 8"xWOF of the paw print from sherry and just barely over one yard of the green that sue sent for the sashings . . . so let's get to thinking on a layout and seeing what else we need to put this together for harmony home

Miss Cindy-

It looks wonderful!!! You did good!

Now to get the extra blocks figured out! I'll start playing, but if anyone else wants to play...GO FOR IT! Cindy how big are the extra blocks-unfinished? I can't remember.

What a beautiful quilt - I'm with Cindy as I think it will be one of my favourites too.

Dorian will be truly blown away with this quilt I'm sure.  Well done ladies.

Today I pieced the backing, made the binding and got everything pressed and ready to load on the frame. Since the cats have decided a quilt on the frame is a kitty hammock, I'm going to wait till next Saturday to start. I think I can load and quilt it in one day. It should be finished and ready to mail to Dorian a week from Tuesday (since Monday is a holiday)! :)

Trish, I just did stitch in the ditch around the stars. I was going to do an 8-pointed sort of flower stencil that I have, but it didn't look right since the star points are offset.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! I can't wait until she receives it and opens it to get her reaction. Sure hope she falls in love with it! It's kind of scary not really having any input from the Mom-to-be except "I like stars"...

Now it's time for me to start the nail bitting until we hear from her!

Thank you all so much for helping with this little quilt for Dorian and her new little one!!

LOL Ms Cindy, her bday is the very last week of March, her dd's is too :)

IF my 'gut feeling' has anything to do with it, baby will be born before April. lol. I don't know why I think that, but I do feel s/he is going to come early...just NOT yet, I have to wait at least another week and a half so baby is fully cooked

Dorian - What beautiful photos, Isaiah is a handsome boy and SO cute too

It must be lovely to have him home with you all. My wish for you now is restful sleep (if you can get) - you need to take care of yourself too.

Love and hugs,

Oh, Dorian.... Isaiah is Beautiful!   I'm so happy that you are both home now with your family.   Prayers continue that he will continue to make progress and growth.   Sounds like you have been through the tiny baby stuff with Jed, so hopefully you will have the peace of mind that everything will be ok.

hey, y'all!!!

Dorian,

I know it's been a long time coming . . . no excuses . . . at least none that matter . . . BUT the little quilt made from the leftovers of Isaiah's quilt are finished!   I have a nice little baby quilt - I think it turned out pretty cute!

Dorian, do you want me to send it to Harmony Home?  or do you have another charity in mind?  your choice, my dear, just let me know!  If you want it sent to HH, let me know, is the address still the same?  Do I need to wash it before I mail?
love & hugs to all!

That's just darling Ms Cindy!! I really don't have any other place that I know of. All of my charity work has gone to HH, and I always sent my things to Connie or Jess, so I have no idea of the address! So go ahead and send it to HH, get a hold of Jess for the addy if you don't have it. Or if that is too cumbersome to do, just send it to a charity of your choice :) Thanks for making the extra's into another little quilt for someone. I know they'll love it to death!!

ROFL Jami!! If I were younger.... lol, I'm having a hard enough time keeping up with Isaiah, who is going to be 5 next month!!

SO NICE to see both of you! Even if it is so briefly.
