Hi, y'all, from the land of magnolias!!

Jess has reserved our retreat dates in 2012 for Wednesday, March 14 through Monday, March 19.  The price is $395.  We will be at the Quilter's Cabin in Tomball, TX, once again!!

Each retreater will be asked to purchase, prepare and serve one of the following: A single Brunch, Dinner, or Dessert for the entire group. We will go out for one dinner, just like we did this year.  And again, we will have a shop-hop outing in combination with dinner out!

Jess will design a Mystery Quilt project for the group to work on.  You will, of course, be free to bring your own project if you prefer.  Cutting instructions will be posted in advance.  Of course, The Quilt and Needle will provide fabric kits for your shopping pleasure, but those will also be an optional purchase.

The non-refundable deposit to hold your place is $50. You can mail it to:

The Quilt and Needle
P.O. Box 265
Wellborn, TX 77881
USA

Overseas members – You may send your deposits via PayPal.

Everyone else - please send a check directly to Jess if you can, so that she doesn’t have to pay transaction fees on it.

Ladies, we can’t stress this enough – we think this retreat is going to fill up REALLY fast. We know most of this year's retreaters have already decided to come back, and several other ladies are planning to come as well. So please make a post or send Jess jess@thequiltandneedle.com or me cindy@thequiltandneedle.com an e-mail and let one of us know if you are sending your deposit – AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I can't wait to meet you too Lizzie, Jeri and Sally!  And Milica I am sooo excited you will join us again! I think Cindy hit the nail on the head when she said it just wasn't the same without you. I have only been one year and I can see how it would be so different without you! Hope you make a great recovery this year with the knee and you can feel great when you get there!

How long til we go now?  8 1/2 months?

TOMBALLERS!!!!  Guess what??  there are ONLY 61 days left til retreat time that's right at TWO MONTHs - where has the time gone???

jess has received several deposits already but there are still a few who have not sent their checks yet.  check out the list on the first page and let me cindy@thequiltandneedle.com or jess jess@thequiltandneedle.com know that you've got your deposit in the mail.

at this moment, there are 3 spots left - who's wants to join the fun?

also, mealtime preparers need to make your choices - first to speak up gets that spot!

and tomballers, we need to decide on themes/colors for our FQ Game and for our Blindman's Bluff Strip Game, so be thinking on it and let me know!

OK girlies...hold onto your hats! Lizzie's gonna change it up and do a dinner this time! Put me on for Thursday please. You can also put me down for a door prize. I've been watching the airlines, so will hopefully buy my ticket at the lowest possible price. I am putting in a request for a machine to borrow from someone. I really don't feel like shlepping mine on the plane and trying to get it into the overhead bin. Counting the minutes....Lizzie

I have an extra machine I can bring too, if anyone needs it. I will probably bring it just in case, anyway.

I vote Black and White (I used up all my winnings on a sample for one of my classes, so I need to replenish my stash!!).

I will just take whatever meal is left, after everyone signs up.

Also, the strip poker game will be much faster this time, since we will be doing a new betting system. I will explain upon arrival, but I think it will make this fabulous game much better!!

lizzie, this pattern is sooooo easy peasy and the perfect way to showcase the lovely layer cake - i don't have to cut those lovely purples into itty-bitty pieces - sometimes, simple is more

midge, i am making the Bricks patter, just like the link i posted   what hourglass pattern are you talking about?  not that i plan to change my mind, since i have already cut my cake

i've also got my fabrics bought to go with my Sweet Sixteen Spring Flowers from Ms. Pat's swap a couple of years or so ago . . . the pattern i'll use for those is Holiday Garden from Quiltermaker N/D 2006 issue.  i'll get that ready for another tomball project

Ooooo Cindy....I like...A LOT! You know I've got a layer cake too, that I haven't known what to do with. Part of the problem has been not wanting to cut it up into tiny pieces. Perhaps you have given me an idea to think about.....

yeah thelma it's a Moda BakeShop pattern Easy Strawberry Fields Bricks Quilt.  it calls for a layer cake and a charm pack - but i just did a bit of figuring to just use my layer cake, make a wee bit smaller, most likely will add a border, then have a lap quilt for me

i did not find a copy of the Holiday Garden pattern online - shoot i could not even find a pic of it online.  the pattern is in the Quiltmaker Nov./Dec. 2006 issue.  here's a scanned pic of it and my fabrics - hopefully i have enough variety in my flower swap fabrics to have a different flower in each of the squares

Cindy talking about layer cake patterns ........jogged the old brain cells here. Have you ever visited Lyn Brown site. Fabulous..anyways for Christmas she made available her e-book pf patterns free for layer cakes. I think there are 24 of the most awesome and different patterns. I think it might still be there.

http://lynbrown.com/january-swap-blue-bricks-quilts/#more-4973

She is also doing a Blue bricks and it is there now....check it out.

Hugs and stitches

Just below where she tells you what you need for the 'bricks', she says click here for the second quilt she made out of the layers she didn't use as bricks!!

thanks, debbieann!  i did see gerda's link to lyn's e-book back before christmas and saved it - those patterns were just not what i was wanting for this particular layer cake.  the blue bricks pattern from your link is great too - thanks for that!!  i just really really really like the brick pattern from the moda bake shop

Yes Ms. Sherry, I received your deposits. :-)

Ladies, if you have not sent me your deposit, please contact me as soon as possible. We have a few more ladies that are still deciding if they want to come, but (if there is less than eight of us) we may be moved over to the new Log Cabin facility next door to the building we've been in before. I want to have a better idea of the head count.

Everyone else, let me know when to expect your balance due. I don't usually go to the post office very often unless I am expecting something specific.

Thanks!!

Everyone check your email!!

As Ms. Sherry keeps telling us, we haven't got much time left before the retreat. Awesome, but oh my! I have so much left to do.

Lizzie, I have your check. Nancy, no sign of yours yet, but I went to the PO yesterday, not today.

Ladies, if you haven't sent your balance, please send me an email and let me know when to expect it.

Hugs!!

I'm putting on my tunes and getting back to work.

Okay ladies, we have a few things that need your attention.

Meals:

I went ahead and signed up for two meals, since we don't have 12 people this time. We have two more meals that need to be covered on Sunday: Brunch and Dinner. Please let me know if you want to take an extra meal. If we have some last minute sign-ups, then we will let them take one of the meals on Sunday instead. Remember, this doesn't have to be an extravagant meal. Heck, buy a Stouffers lasagna family size, a loaf of French bread, a bag of salad, and bam! Dinner is served.

Games:

The two color ways that received the most votes and the highest priority votes (1st choices) were Black and White and Jewel Tones. They are our Fat Quarter games. You will need three FQs of each. (I know that Jewel Tones can be a very wide range of colors, so check out the picture for what we are going for.)

The Strip Poker - Blind Man's Bluff was a bit harder. I didn't want anyone to play in a color way that they did not chose, so I've seperated us into three games (rather than two):
Purples - Connie, Aunt Nancy, and Lizzie
Batiks - Sherry, Milica, and Nancy G.
Turquoise and Brown - Nikki, Cindy, and Jess
(We'll be using Big Blind and Little Blind betting rules. You can read about it at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_(poker) , but you don't have to. I will explain it when we get there. It will make the games end faster, since the minimum betting will double every hand.)

Door Prizes:

And who is bringing door prizes? Anyone? Is everyone bringing one so we can play the white elephant swap game like usual, or no?

Packing:

Don’t forget to check the packing list on the first posting of the forum thread. Remember to bring a pillow (I forget a pillow almost every year). Also, bring a couple of good cd’s for sewing tunes, if you have something you would like to share with the group.

Shop Hopping on Friday:

I know that we have found some great places and some not so great places in the past. Let me know if you guys want me to take any of the shops listed below off of the itenerary, or add one not listed. Didn't we go to a new one last year other than TQMs?

Friday Itinerary:

9:00 AM - Leave The Quilter's Cabin for SHOP HOPPING!!
Texas Quilt Machines  - 2311 Sciaaca Road, Spring, TX 77373
GRS Creations - 302 Main St. Spring, TX 77373 (this one is in Old Town Spring)
Old Town Spring shopping and lunch
The Hen House - 5701 Louetta Road Suite 200, Spring, TX 77379-7928
Quilters Crossing - 108 Commerce Street, Tomball, TX 77375
5:00 PM - Go to dinner at Goodson's Cafe - 27931 Tomball Parkway ( S.H.Business 249), Tomball, TX. 77377

Those of you who have GPS in your cars, please let me know. We will want a couple of drivers with good navigational systems, like usual.

Nancy, do you remember the order we usually go? Do I have it right? I know we usually start in Old Town Spring, and make our way back. By popular demand, we will spend a couple of hours in Old Town Spring, have lunch there, and meet up after lunch to continue on our way.

Okay, Sherry and Nikki, you are on Sunday Brunch. Lizzie, if you don't mind, I moved you to Saturday brunch with Milica, since she is still a maybe. If Milica makes it, that is her meal. If not, Lizzie, would you cover it? I took you off of Sunday Brunch.

I also added in there what I will be making for my brunch and my dessert. Feel free to let us know your meals if you want, and we will add it to the list for everyone to look forward to!

Jess - I have no problem moving to a different breakfast location, and will cover it if Milica can't make it. It will likely be my usual Manhandler and fruit (since that's easy). Haven't figured out yet what I'm going to do for dinner. But y'all will be the first to know.

I am SOOOOOOOOO excited

I realized yesterday, that I fly out in 2 weeks....so now its LESS than 2 weeks. I gotta start thinking more seriously about what to bring (besides a big suitcase, that is). Gotta be prepared for my shopping expeditions

Jess - I've got a door prize ready.

Fancy Nancy - What a good idea! I'm sure I can come up with things I will never finish that I can pass on to you lovelies.

I've also got some goodie bag items...but like Jess, they're a secret.

Lizzie.

Oh my goodness....the DETAILS!!!

I have started my own countdown with lists, lists, and more lists! Took care of the bills and taxes today, so those pesky tasks will not weigh on my mind while I'm with my girlies. At this point I can say:

1 - Making lists of things I need to bring. Check.

2- Made a motel reservation for Tuesday night. Check.

3- Made a car rental reservation. Check.

4 - Printed off proof of reservations, etc. Check.

5- Relaxing with a wonderful glass of red wine. Check.

6 - Mulling over breakfast and dinner recipes. Then printing off possibilities. Check.

Getting ready to see my girlies is PRICELESS!!!

Anybody want to do a facial or massage?

Lizzie.

Oh I assume you are gettin a car again? If so ya want to meet up in Conroe again and go to that quilt shop like last year or go straight to the house? I am off to make my list now while I am cooking.

Yup. I'm getting a car. (I don't know why I do since I barely use it while I'm there, but....you never know.) Yup to meeting in Conroe. That was a good time. Give me a call Wednesday morning when you're getting close to Houston. Send me the shop name again please.

After the day she has had today though, she is ready to runnoft rit now! Pray she keeps her sanity after dealing with someone who I refuse to mention his name! #$% ^&*!@@# @$%$%  and that was the nice stuff! Sorry, but he is as useless as frog hair!

You still have our cell #'s don't ya? If not I know Nikki has yours in her phone and I sent Cindy mine the other day. So we will let ya know if she wants to try to make it!

Oh that's rich! "As useless as frog hair." Gotta remember that one.

I'm hoping and praying Nikki has a better day today.

Say...does anyone remember if they've got a crockpot at the cabin? That would make fixing dinner so much easier.

Lizzie.

There is a crockpot, Lizzie! I used it last time! That is if we are going to the same cabin!

And that is the same # I have for you Nancy! You might want to delete it from up there now!

I would love to get my hands on him!       Good thing I work for a bail bond company! Just have to lure him to the Texas side!       Nikki might disown me though!

Hmmm. Sounds like we all gots LOTS to talk about in Tomball. Frog hair indeed! Thanks for the crockpot info. I'm gonna be cooking crockpot turkey lasagne with salad and garlic bread. Trial run at the Haskell house this weekend to make sure it tastes as good as the recipe makes it sound. Not sure about breakfast yet. Maybe Manhandler and fruit since its so easy...but I don't want to bore y'all since I always make it.

Thanks all for answering my email. One more question that can be a public one What's everybody's favorite color? (Besides Louise that is...I think I've got her figured out.)

Ladies, we're going to have fine weather, if a tad on the warm side. Forecast says upper 70s to mid 80s, with a heat index in the 90s. That means warm and humid girls... So no layers, no bundling up.
:-) Bring a sweater for inside, or just in case, and an umbrella.

Nancy G. And Sherry - since we won't have Milica at the retreat, do the two of you want to join either one of the other two themed poker games? If you already have your fabrics cut, no worries. We'll work with it!! I have some ideas. So basically, let me know what the two of you want to do.

When your calves and your ankles just sort of run together...no pretty, dainty ankle bones...

I gotta run (ha. an hour away) to a quilt shop today. Ordered a roll of batting that I have to pick up. Also going to pick up some purples to make into strips. Anybody remember how we tied em up last year? Was it rubber bands?

I'm with you Cindy, Tomball = much jammie time..

Lizzie I had to look it up?  I had heard it before but forgot.  Speaking of the strips some use fabric to tie most used rubber bands. I put all mine from last year in my "Lizzie bag" and have not looked inside till last night that is why I knew that answer. Yes I have to cut purple today too but have a bunch.

Jess I don't mind doing whatever on the stip poker thing, just let me know! I plan to get all that done this week-end.

I don't really understand all that anyways!  Do I cut 2 different colors?  I do know that I cut up to 20 strips but I am clueless on the rest! lol

And what do you mean tie them?  Remember Nikki and I are newbies to this game!

And there will be no shorts for this girl either!  MAYBE capris but absolutely no shorts!

Sherry,

On the strips I cut 2-4 of each color of purple so there would be variety.  Then you roll them and use the strip of fabric or rubber band to tie them.  The strip poker last year was too funny our jaws hurt from laughing, I had to learn to play poker all over again.  Jess will show us how And remember FQ"S for the fat quarter game  left right center.  Now back to the sewing room for me

CANKLE!!!!  i love it, lizzie, cause i got those too!!!!  my momma has the most beautiful ankles . . . but did i inherit those????  OH NO!!!!!  i was blessed with my daddy's cankles hey but at least i also got his small feet ;) (jess, how come we got no winking emoticon???)

sherry, i cut up pieces of embroidery floss and use that to tie up my strips . . . but then i got like a a hundred-million-billion floss skeins   the game is sort of a mix of poker and blindman's bluff - and jess says she has a new twist on it for this year.  i have my strips all ready - but i'll need to get my FQs on our trip to the conroe LQS on our way to tomball

later, gators, on my way to get my hair did . . .

3!

Woo Hoo!

Got my goodies done now to pack up the sewing stuff today then all I will have left is the regular packing to do on Tuesday!!!!

Nikki said she would get up early Nancy! So looks like we will be leaving here sometime around 6am! I am going to go by her house Tuesday afternoon and grab all her stuff except what she has to have to get ready that am so that will already be done. So we will be down your way about the time you guys are leaving too! That is if Louise gets out of bed!

OK girlies....the crockpot lasagne is all made and cooking for its trial run today. Wish me luck, cause if its a bust, I'm gonna have to come up with a Plan B. (And cooking for 8 just isn't one of my talents.)

Nancy - can you send me the Conroe address too? I've been looking on the computer and can't remember where it was. (Just a little bit directionally challenged, don't you know.) And this time I won't have my Kitty Kat navigating for me. I have navigation on my phone though, so as long as I have an address I'll be good to go..

yes thelma is really nice to louise in the mornings my only job is to make sure ms. garmin is on so we don't miss our exit & take the scenic route . . .

i am excited but i am also in "ok what else do i need to take care of before i leave" mode . . . but once i'm out the door tuesday after work, it'll all be a blur in my tail-lights . . . thelma, i'll have my stuff packed and ready to leave - will just run by the house to get comfy, kiss my wren and princess bye-bye and be heading south on I-55  i'll holler when i'm on the interstate

Louise we will not be taking the scenic route unless you talk Themla's ears off like you did last time where she did not hear Ms. Garmin  saying turn here you crazy women. JUst let me know when you are close I assume it will be late.  And I will not keep you up I will let you get some sleep. Fresh sheets and I dont think Merlin will bother you.   lol But he is wild so who is to say.

Thanks for the address Thelma. I'll be talking to you girlies on Wednesday morning. I get in to Hobby around 10pm and I'll be staying in a motel near the airport.

I'm like you Louise....trying to remember all the things I gotta take care of before I leave. So many lists! Gonna grab my suitcase from the basement tonight and start putting stuff into it. I'm sure I'll forget something. Roy had to go to New York on business, so Dave is on airport duty for me. He's also taking care of my dogs, as well as taking over a couple of my pet jobs.

OK...nuff of this. I gotta go get that suitcase and put some laundry in the washer.

Counting the minutes.

No on the massages girlies. They needed at least 2 hrs worth and evidently she's booked next week anyway. I could still try to get the facial lady out, but she needs at least 2 hrs commitment as well.

No worries Jess. That just means more of my budget can be devoted to fabric!

Sherry - I know I know! I just got home after being out ALL morning running errands and working. But, I think I'm pretty set. Now its time to finish up the laundry and start putting things in the suitcase. So exciting!.

Put my suitcase on the floor of my bedroom and throughout the day, I slowly got it packed. My poor little Barclay is now a ball of gray, furry anxiousness. He HATES it when I go away. At the moment he is glued to my side, smooshed next to me in a chair. Hope I remember everything.

Right TOMBALLERS!

Make sure you all have a great time - I spoke with Cindy last night and told her to print off a large photo of my face (Yikes you all cry!!!) and stick to my armchair so that I can keep my watchful eye over you!  I will be making the mystery quilt myself but not this one - I will be making Jess's last mystery quilt as I have the fabric for that one.

I intend to start saving for next year and am talking to my leg daily (yes I did say leg and no I am not barking yet!) so that it behaves over the next 12 months so I can make Tomball for next year.

Think of me often as I sure will be thinking of you all.

x

1!

I still haven't gotten packed! Got soem stuff gathered but nothing in the suitcase yet! And I am supposed to attend Nikki's birthday party from her in-laws tonight. They are having having it before since we will be there on her bday! Our side will do her party after we get home. So I may be up kinda late tonight. Oh well, I was up til 11:30 last night having dinner with friends! Guess I'm just getting geared up for late night with you girls!

Milica, Jami  we gonna miss you! I like the face picture idea!

Now off to get that last day in at work so I can run home after and get busy before I have to make a quick trip back to town!

Gotta go!

Awww. Thanks Cindy! (Sure wish I liked flying better than I do.) I started stressing about forgetting stuff last night and Katherine reminded me that I can always pick up anything I really need. Not good for the budget, but true. Barclay continues to be attached to my hip...how DOES he know that I'm going somewhere? So...today's job is to try to stay calm. Have a couple of errands to run this morning, one dog to walk, then get to the airport this afternoon. My flight goes from Hartford to Orlando to Houston. Too bad the layover isn't long enough for a trip to DisneyWorld.

Jami and Milica KNOW that you will be missed.

OK...let's get this day on!.

So as Katherine was leaving for work this morning, she gives me a big hug goodbye, tells me to have fun, and then says, "I expect to see some completed sewing when you get back. I know you. Maybe a little less time talking and more time sewing." What ARE we going to do with that girl?

well apparently we did not do a very good job of instilling proper retreat protocol   tell kat that her attendance at 2013 Tomball is mandatory as we simply must have a refresher course in said subject matter

btw y'all, wren not only assisted in the preparation of but also gave a on your sweet treats

Nothing like some quality time with fellow quilters but I am so glad to be home too! Nikki and I rolled in here about an hour ago! Had to make one more detour in Shreveport before coming on in. She needed another fabric fix!  lol Truth be know I needed just a tiny bit more too!

Can't wait til next year! Made some more wonderful friends!  Love ya Lizzie! Thanks for bringing Aunt Nancy, Connie!  She is such a ball of enthusiasm! We had such a blast!

See yall next year!

Glad that both you and Nikki are both home safely.  Don't blame you for stopping for more fabric, mind just as well finish off the retreat with a little something extra.

I posted some pictures on FB, I think my camera ate some I know I took more that that. Had a blast Aunt Nancy has gotten us all inspired again, Thanks to Connie for bringing her. I hope to make it next year.

My plane from Houston to Baltimore made a brief stop in South Carolina to let some people off, and pick more up. When we got to Baltimore they took it out of service....glad I was changing planes. Plane from Baltimore to Hartford was a little delayed and I finally landed at 10pm, then home by 11. I was sooooo tired I slept like a baby.

Back to work this morning. Got some pet visits in a few minutes, then off to meet a new customer. (Good thing since I need to replenish my bank account!)

Love to all my Tomball girlies. Y'all make me feel great! When I head to the cape in May, I'll see if I can hunt up more of my special fat quarters

Lizzie.

Okay, Mom and Aunt Nancy made it home tonight (although they were a bit delayed by storms and flooding). I think that has everyone home safe and sound. Gosh, maybe I'll unpack tomorrow.... Tehe.

I had so much fun!! This was one of the best weeks I've ever had!! Love and hugs to all of my Tomball girlies - past, present, and future.

Jess

Is there going to be a Tomball Retreat in 2013 or have I just missed all the messages? Would sure like to make this one as must get my fix!

Nikki and I talked alot before '12 retreat and had just about decided that it would be our last.  Raising 3 kids can get to the pocket book and she wouldn't hear of me going without her!  But after retreat on the way home we had another discussion.

It was decided, we looked at each other and said "How can we NOT go back?"

So Connie, you better be bringing Aunt Nancy back too! We loved her!

So here's to stashing all extra cash back for Tomball 2013!
