Welcome to Swap 2011!

It looks like we are going to have a “double your pleasure, double your fun” Layer Cake Swap as a start to 2011! Pat will host one color choice and I will host the other.

The dates will be the same to sign-up and mail by, but you will send one set of fabrics to Pat and the other to me. We are encouraging you to participate in both Swaps, but understand some people may not want to collect that many Layer Cakes…

This is the “Creamy Neutral” Layer Cake Swap.

For an idea of “creamy neutral”, think about what you would use as a neutral background for one of your quilts…and make it as neutral as possible.

Since creamy neutrals can be really hard to photograph, I will be posting an album, but it will be far too difficult to use it as a tool to help avoid duplicates. For this swap, please expect doubles or even triples or more of some fabrics in your return packets.

Here are the dates:

Sign-ups will start immediately and close on January 15, 2011.

Sign-ups are closed as of January 17, 2011.

The mail in date is January 31, 2011.

The date is .

Pat and I will swap your layers and return them 2 weeks after we receive the last package.

We will be swapping 10” squares in sets of TEN.

Here are the rules:

1) We are swapping 100% cotton quilting fabrics.
2) Please be sure to wash and press all fabrics first.
3) Please cut carefully and be sure all selvages are removed from all squares. Squares that have any SELVAGE showing WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU UNSWAPPED.
4) You may swap as many sets as you like. Scrappy sets are okay. 5) However, PLEASE DO NOT SEND MORE THAN 10 squares or ONE SET of each fabric. Different color waves of the same print are okay.
5) Please pack each set separately in a plastic baggie with your name and address and Set # on the outside.
6) Please mail your swap packages no later than January 31, 2011.
7) Include a return envelope, self-addressed with stamps for the correct postage on the envelope. Post offices will not take pre-dated postage labels.

Please use Priority Mail or First Class padded envelopes. Prior experience has proven those to be the most likely to be returned to you by the post office. If you would like delivery confirmation, there is an extra $ .70 charge.

International swappers are always welcome! Swappers from outside the U.S.A. may make private arrangements with me for the return postage. Please PM me and we can find something that works well for both of us.

To Sign-Up, all participants should please post in this thread and send me a Private Message with your …

By "creamy neutrals", does that mean in the cream color range? so no tans... no whites? just checking before I start pulling fabrics....

Okay then; We are off and running!

Glad to have all of you on board. This time, you get to help with the decisions.

Pat and I mulled over how to describe "Creamy Neutral" as to color. I would like to hear what each of you think and maybe we can come to a decision. It would sure help me know what to shop for as to color.

We are in Seattle, so I went to visit a LQS yesterday. Found lots of neat stuff, but nothing I was satisfied with .

Ideas?

I'm like Sally - white, creams and lighter tans. In some light no matter what some white are creamy next to others but look white just on their own. It can be sometimes frustrating. By covering all then eveything will fall into place, I think anyways.

Just my thought on the swap.lol

Still thinking about it, however. No pay and I have to think a little harder.

Hugs and stitches

Thank you ladies for defining it a little more. There are so many options, and so many choices. The one thing I would hate to have would be too many white on whites and no creams.

By the way, when I posted last, I had only one hand...you know, granddaughter. Anyway, I found lots of really neat stuff, just nothing for this swap. I bought with color in mind and decided to shop at home for the creamy things.l

Have a very Merry Christmas today.

I like the idea of a range of color.... so that we have light tans, cream, beige, and white...

Here is a scrappy disappearing 9 patch block I've made several of using a variety of colors, and I LOVE the way they all play together...

But then... my name isn't scraphappydenise for nothing!

Pat, I can see this with appliqued Christmas "things" like Santa, snowman, candle etc on these. Or any applique, really, if you do a "country" style quilt. I like the idea of scrappy backgrounds. And as a subdued quilt top by itself, it looks great, Denise! It reminds me of the coffee and cream quilts that were popular a couple of years back, I think there were even some books and patterns out for those, but I don't recall any like this one of Denise's.

No, sorry, Annette, I'm trying to stay away from any and all swaps - I'm still behind on two swaps (plan to work on those this week) - shoot, my Christmas cards are still sitting here waiting to be written and signed - envelopes are done, including stamps, but not the rest. And costs keep going up and income (pension) doesn't. Just can't do it anymore. I will just enjoy the eye candy you all provide :)

Welcome Midge W, Dana and Laura. Glad to have you playing with the rest of us! Denise has shown us how wonderful these beauties can be used.

Laura, this is not just batiks, but quilting cottons. I hope this won't disappoint you. Pat is doing the jewel tone batik swap. I do agree, neutral batiks are hard to come by.

Annette, I'm good with creamy neutrals that are not batiks -- neutrals are hard to come by in my stash.   I promise, I'll share all kinds of creamy neutral cottons.  Laura

I have three sets, currently, I will put a few more swatches up as I find them questionable and would like your thoughts.  The far right, almost white is a Rock Candy by Michael Miller, I forget what shade.  The middle one is a linen texture from P&B Textiles and the far left is a creamy Grunge texture from Basic Gray by Moda.

Like Denise I have also used mixed neutrals as a background for a quilt I made for my daughter 5 years or so ago.  I have attached a piccie but you may have to zoom into it to see the neutrals clearly.

I also designed a quilt that used all scrappy neutrals. It was a clean up project called Spin Your Scraps. It was a very big quilt.

Milica, really nice quilt. Your daughter is so lucky. The neutrals worked out wonderfully!

Debbieann, an outstanding quilt! Ladies, I was the lucky recipient of 2 of Debbieann's patterns when she came to visit Las Vegas. She is so very talented and we haven't seen nothin' yet....I'm sure!

Miss Pat, I did make it to a LQS yesterday. The one Debbieann and I visited. They have sold the business and had a New Year's Sale of 30% off. Long story short, I got there about noon and half their inventory was gone! They had been totally swamped when they opened and were still very busy, but not much to look at. I did find 1 piece.

Guess I will have to travel to Henderson and Boulder City next weekend ... it is a tough break, but one I must make (lol). I love this excuse....

Wow Midge, thank you for the picture. The one I found doesn't look like any of the one's in the photo. I will get an album started.

Midge ... lovely neutrals ...

Annette ... sounds like a   frantic frenzy of fabric fondlers decended on that quilt shop   ... good cause for a shop hopping road trip ...

I did not get any fabric shopping in over the weekend.  My shop hopping plans shall have to wait until this Saturday and/or Sunday.  We did pick up the new living room furniture last Friday morning that was my "family gift" for Christmas.  We really needed a new sofa as the old one was 20 years old and very worn out.  New Year's Day we had an open brunch for family and friends.  We also packed away almost all our holiday decorations.  So I have been very busy ... all in a good way ...

I did find some nice neutrals in my stash from which I may slice a few layers ...

... still trying to decide if I can part with them ... Pat

Finally, I went shopping last night and found several pieces. Now to clean my sewing room, or at least 'creatively restack' so I can see if I have a few more pieces today. Then I will take a picture and post my choices. Anyone with pictures to share out there?

You have until the 15th to sign-up for this swap, so we are ready for more people ... and more layers

I have piccies!

I have 8 sets ... um ... right now ... may try to whistle up a scrappy set or two from my stash to add to these ...

I do not think the details in the fabrics will be very clear in these photos. I will wash the ones I just picked up yesterday and cut and let you know when they are in the mail, Annette ....   Pat

Oh I can sort of see the patterns in them. Very nice.

Annette it is like I mentioned over on the batik thread. I'd love to play but circumstances ar going to make it difficult. One getting to a LQS. We had snow today - 6" - just wonderful. Ass to that cold, meds( are a little stronger) and the IV gets to cold. If I did get them the movements of preparing them is ratrher hard on the IV arm. I still have the little sucker (LOL) for 13 days.

Next time I will be able tp play.

Denise, those are great!

I have 7 sets now, but might wait until all arrive. One might be a duplicate, and I might just have to keep it!

Hope to post pictures a little later tonight.

OK, so I finally have mine ... I hope they aren't duplicates.  If batiks are OK, I'll send six swaps, but if not I'll only send five.  Let me know.  Laura

Wow! We have a new member joining us. Welcome to the first 2011 Layer Cake Swap Lynn. Glad to have you on board. If you get a chance, post a picture. Otherwise, I will try when they get here in the mail.

Sherry, I will add your name to the list and yes, I do have your information. The Swap will officially close Monday, but just let me know how many layers you want when you have a minute.

Midge, thank you for letting me know they are on the way. I will let you know when they arrive.

Laura, I will put you down for 6 sets. I think they all look wonderful!

Me? I found 7 neurtals and another, but darn, it was a duplicate of one I received in Rebecca's when they arrived, so, I guess I will just have to keep it! This is such tough duty sometimes ...

If anyone else wants to join us, please do. I know the deadline is today, but I won't close the swap until after work Monday (3 p.m. PST). Join us if you can. The more the merrier!

Annette ... I have my fabrics all washed and am pressing and cutting and bagging today.  We are in the midst of another snow storm and this one is forecast to change to sleet and freezing rain with considerable icing ... with potential power-outages ... so it will likely be Friday or Saturday before I can get to the post office.  I will let you know when they are in the mail.  Thanks for hosting and being such a great co-host, sweetie.  This swap has gone a long way to lift me out of the doldrums ...   Pat

You are very welcome Pat. Any time I can help those doldrums...

For those who have snow, we had a 74 degree day yesterday. DH washed his pick-up and enjoyed the sun. I'm sick again and ran a temp of 101. Go figure! lol

Both swaps have helped me too Pat. Especially when I get surprised by something in the mail that I hadn't ordered and can enjoy! I do promise to be neet however ...

Annette - sent my neutrals off this afternoon... priority.... you should have them by Monday....

Wow, did postage go up again! my 5 sets of neutrals was over $7.00 one direction..... parcel post was only about 50 cents less.... so i went with priority.....

I guess I'm going to have to take a long hard look at this kind of swap..... or... really limit myself to fewer sets.

Annette ... my package is on the way to you.  I finished with 9 sets.   Yes, the postage did indeed go up   ... and the post office worker waited until he put stamps on the return envelope to tell me that it would be less expensive to send it in a flat rate priority box ... so if it looks confusing to have it arrive in a box and the postage on a return envelope   ... that would be why ...   When I get my squishies back in the mail, it shall all be worth it.   I also enclosed the cash for the return delivery comfirmation and "baked" a special scrappy "layer cake" for you to say thank you!   Pat

Lynn, your layers arrived last night  They are really nice!

DH just told me we would go to his office and lay things out and swap on Sunday. That means mailing Monday afternoon, soooo, depending on weather, you ladies may have a weekend surprise before Valentine's Day.

I will keep you posted on the progress,

Not to worry Pat, I am soo looking forward to getting my batik layers back, I am prepared to hang in there! Besides, if I can get mine in the mail Monday, then you mail the following Monday, it will take care of the month of February for surprises in the mail! and I like those kind of surprises in the mail ...

DH is preparing for his first 5K run this morning in almost a year. He damaged his achilles tendon last May and hasn't been able to compete or run much since. Then tomorrow, before the Super Bowl, we will go to his office and lay out the neutrals.    Now, I do promise to be neat and not too untiedy. But then, that would take all the fun out of fondling all those layers

I'm sorry to say, but it is suppose to be 66F today and higher tomorrow. Lots of sun. Everyone please take care in all the snow and rains out there.

Ladies,

You are so generous! Thank you. I found some lovely surprises as I laid out the layers this morning.

All layers have been swapped, counted twice, packaged and taped for mailing tomorrow after work. I get off at 3:00 and will head to the post office. Most all are going priority mail, so you should receive them by the end of the week.

I do apologize to a few of you. There will be some duplicate fabrics due to the number of layers sent. You did not get your fabrics back though!

Thank you all  for such a wonderfully fun experience. Please let me know when your packages arrive.

Annette-
I got a package on my front porch when I got home from work today.
At first I thought it might be my Secret Santa gift, then my Secret Valentine gift.
But then I noticed that it was MY handwriting on the envelope, and I new that it was one of the swaps.

I tok a quick peek at the fabrics and they look really great!! Can't wait to figure out what to do with them.
Thanks so much for all your efforts with this swap!!

I am sewwwwww happy today!

Annette ... my layer cakes arrived!

All the fabrics are beautiful. Thank you to everyone who swapped!    I particularly like the creamy seashells ... and the toiles ... and the paisleys ... ah ... and the florals ... and the vines ... the dots ... the swirls ... oh, I just love them all ... ... oh, and the batik!! ... wish I could find that one locally ... not a great selection of neutral batiks near me ... I have been looking for a background fabric to go with my jewel batik layers and am having a tough time finding one so nice!

I still have my fabrics from the Americana swap from last year and I am going to use many of these scrappy neutrals in a quilt together ... a project I am looking forward to making this summer I hope.

Annette ... you are such a great hostess ... and thanks to Dusty for his help ... thank you for all the work you have done on this swap ...

 Pat

YEAH! my creamy neutrals were waiting in my mailbox today! I've leafed through them and love them all! I don"t have a specific plan for these at this point, so I guess they'll join the other swap packets. the 30's sets.... the beachy sets.... the flower sets.... the patriotic sets..... and the batik sets when they get here..... at least I can proudly say that i've used the black and white sets....

Annette - thank you so much for hostessing this swap..... we appreciate all the work it takes to make it run smoothly.

I'm so glad everyone is liking the neutrals. It was a fun swap to do. I still haven't heard from Laura, Sherry or Lynn whether their packages arrived.  I sure hope they did!

I've been going through patterns and trying to decide how to best use these beauties. I'm open to suggestions.

I received a PM from Lynn and her layers arrived last Wednesday. All layers are home and accounted for, so to speak. Yeah!

Thank you Pat for being a wonderful Co-Hostess and Jess for providing the Q&N so we can "play".

Enjoy the layer cakes and let us know how you used yours.
