What is Black and White all over and ready for a cake? It's the new Black and White Layer Cake Swap!

Please join us for a 10" Square Layer Cake Swap!

Sets of TEN 10" squares will be swapped.

Jess has given me permission to post this swap and Cherie has agreed to be my co-hostess.

Here are the dates:

Sign-ups until: SWAP IS CLOSED

Please mail your swap packages no later than: September 24th

I will swap and return: Two weeks after the last swap packet is received by me.

We will be swapping 10" squares in sets of TEN.

You may swap as many sets as you like. Scrappy sets are okay. However, PLEASE DO NOT SEND MORE THAN 10 squares or ONE SET of each fabric. Different colorways of the same print are okay. For example, if you find a white background with a black daisy, you can swap the opposite one as well, the black background with a white daisy.

I will post an album so we may enjoy seeing all the fabric and try not to duplicate each others fabrics. I would ask you to please post pictures of your fabric in the thread or email them to me and I will post them in the album. If you do not have a camera, you may still participate, but please check the album carefully for duplicates. I will take a picture of your fabrics and post them when I received them.

Important note...please send only 100% cotton quilting quality fabrics and please be sure you wash and press all fabrics first.

Please cut carefully and be sure that all selvages are removed from all squares. Squares that have any SELVAGE showing WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU UNSWAPPED.

Also ... your sets may be scrappy, but please be sure all fabrics MEET THE FABRIC REQUIREMENTS OF THIS SWAP...

All fabrics should be black or white with a black or white print. NO COLORS other than black or white.

Please mail your swap packages no later than: I will swap and return: You may swap as many sets as you like. Scrappy sets are okay. However, PLEASE DO NOT SEND MORE THAN 10 squares or ONE SET of each fabric. Different colorways of the same print are okay. Please pack each set separately in a plastic baggie with your name and address and Set # on the outside.

Please be sure to send a return envelope with your address and enough stamps attached to cover your postage. Please use only STAMPS ... no pre-dated postage labels will be accepted by my post office.

Please use Priority Mail or First Class padded envelopes, if possible. You may send Parcel Post, but please be sure to allow at least an extra week mailing time. If you would like a Delivery Confirmation Number for the return package, please enclose the extra cost in your envelope.

International swappers are always welcome! Swappers from outside the USA may make private arrangements to send additional fabric for the return postage. Please send a self-addressed envelope. Fabric may be sent in exchange for your return postage. PM me and we can find something that works well for both of us.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DUPICATES: Although there is a vast variety of black and white prints available, many of them are very similar in design and scale. I will ask swappers to submit photos of their fabrics again for us to enjoy ... and to try to avoid sending the same fabric as another swapper ... it may be too difficult to tell from a photo if the fabrics are actually the same. So, although I will try to avoid duplicates in return packages, I am not going to worry too much about this. Okay, swappers?

To Sign-Up, all participants should please post in this thread and send me a Private Message with your ...

Telephone Number:

Okay ... let's start swapping fabrics and sharing patterns!

Enjoy!

Hi,

Sounds like this is a go! We are out of town until Monday night, so I will post the rules then. I am going to draw on Pat's wonderful experiences and use her rules, so there won't be any new "wrinkles" to get used to this time.

Get ready....

Hi all,

We are in the Seattle area and fly home tomorrow (monday). I will get the rules posted then and the list started.

Cherie, I will send you a pm when I get organized and start getting names and addresses together. Glad to have the help!

I'm sorry Denise, yes, black and white prints.

Gerda,

Those are wonderful photo's of black and white quilts! How did you find so many so quickly?

I have one I want to make, but need to scan or take a picture before I post it. Will do it tonight after work.

I love sharp contrasts and this one, in any pattern, should be stunning! Sounds to me like Miss Cindy is, well you know, just confused lol. That's why I put purple in the instructions, to catch her attention!

How many shall I sign you up for Gerda?

Annette, sorry,I'm not in this one - not a black and white fan, at all - too modern, though there are some really pretty fabrics out there! And I need to keep costs down. I was just trying to entice Cindy for you LOL I"m bad, eh?

As for the pictures I find, some I come across in blogs or websites, but these I found by typing in the words black and white and purple quilts, then when the Google page comes up with listings, I click on IMAGES in the upper left corner. Lots comes up. That's where these came from.

Have a great day! I'm off to help hubby lift some ductwork into an attic this morning, then home to sew - I got nothing done yesterday.

okey doke . . . if'n i have counted correctly, ms. jess was your 12th sign-up, annette . . . and if so, you may put me down as #13 . . . but only if i can be #13   and of course you have to write my name in purple now to think on how to best incorporate tassels with layer cakes instead of stripping

Well Ms Cindy - you could always attach the tassel in the center of each layer cake sq(now the tassels will be purple -of course) lol sort of like a giant tie quilt. When spun around my how the tassels will swing. Wonderful amusement for you as the kitties tackle said tassels.lol

Just a thought on a very hot humid August nite. lol

PURPLE LOVERS UNITE!!!

midge, i've not quite decided where i am going to put the purple - right now i am leaning toward white sashings and a purple border and top . . . then again, i may just go with purple accents around the bathroom . . . then again, maybe no purple in this bathroom at all . . . after all i also got the two bathrooms in MS that we will start completely remodeling soon - one at a time of course - so plenty of decor decisions to be made!

Sorry you won't be joining us Gerda. You know, some traditional patterns look good in b&W ... just saying ...

Sara, I'm sorry there won't be any recipies right away, but now, that does give me an idea ...

AJ, I have you down 'cause I'm thinking positively ... you want to join ... you want to join ... you want to join ... new mantra

Jeri, my first one was going to be 1 set, but then I went shopping and ... anyway, the rule of thumb is 1 yard = 10 squares plus some for you.

Sherry, glad you and Nikki are joining us. The more the merrier

Jess, we would love to have you join us! Just think how creative you can be with a b&W pallet to start with

Cindy, stripping huh? You can always strip a layer ... cake ...! Or as DH says, he thought of piano keys when I said black and white ...

Thank you ladies for joining. I think we will have lots of fun and shopping can't be all bad, can it?

Okay, I'm officially in for 2 sets. I stopped by the LQS at lunch. They had a whole bunch of black and white prints. I really wanted to walk out with about 20 great ones, but I finally just picked 2. I'll post a picture tonight.

This is so exciting!

Great choices Jeri, I love orientals.

Wonderful wall hanging Gilly! Can we tempt you with another B&W opportunity?

Jess, I will put you down for 3 or 4 or 5 or so....

I've been sick and not up to taking pictures, but all of that has changed. Hope to post some tomorrow.

I have 5 sets cut and ready to mail..... I'll post pics in a while.... I've had these for a while, so I'm sure that they won't be duplicated by someone else... but you never know!

Gilly that wallhanging is fantastic

Jeri - I'm glad that Jess talked you out of the skulls too!

Thank you Denise, it's a summer cold. Gotta have one once in a while so you can really appreciate being well!

I will put you down for 5 Denise. They are really cool!

Annette As promised, some examples. I will not be using these for this swap. They are for another project. You might want to look at this pattern... http://www.fiddlesticksquilts.com/patterns.html

Oooo, Annette, you just send yours straight to me. No need to swap them, they are right up my alley. Okay?

Pat, very nice! It will be fun for you to participate in one with out all of the hostess duties, I bet!

Okay, here is a pic of one of mine (I bought it at the LQS, it is very nice stuff, though it looks weird in the pic cause I adjusted the brightness from the flash). I will not have the other 3 until Friday when Mom arrives for Phire's birthday party. She did say one is white with buttons in black.

Dibs on one of the one with buttons!! How cool is that. I'll have to see if I still have some of the sewing machines...I'm thinking about 4 sets right now but I have to wash them (and some other very important fabrics) and washer is acting up--may be a lost weekend, oh but I have a new grandbaby so would probably be otherwise engaged anyway! LOL

OK, I am a little disappointed that Jeri is not including skulls. They can be very fun, especially for Dia de los Muertos! But, I understand that i may just be a bit weird. I am still looking for my fabrics and will try to avoid duplicating. I can definitely do 2 sets, maybe more. And Cindy, everything should have purple on it!

Good day ladies! What wonderful eye candy today!

Welcome to the swap Miss Pat. Love to have you join us and not just because you bring wonderful fabrics,  but that is really nice too! lol

Wonderful print Jess! What I couldn't do with that one....hummmmmmm

Sally, glad to have you join us. I will put you down for 4 (or more) sets and a big huge Congratulations Grandma!

Laura, I will put you down for 2 sets, you can add more if you like. The sign-up's are open for a while yet ... hehehehe, I like being bad when it encourages fabric shopping

Debbieann, I will put down 3 sets ... love those stars, and the print on the right, and the print on the left.... oh heck, anyways....

An album has been started and I will post your pictures there as soon as possible. Cindy has volunteered to help me out on this, so if we miss someone, let us know.

I'm getting soooooo excited to see these start arriving!

I have 4 sets so far- and my girlfriends are shop hopping In Lower Michigan this past weekend. I told one of them if they saw anything I HAD to have or some B&W's to pick some up for me. So I have no idea how many sets i really have. I should know more Tuesday or Wednesday.

Okay, your number is entered Midge and just so you know, you can always increase it until the last day ... I mean, I'm just saying ....

Cherie, I got your number down too. Thank you and I do really appreciate you signing up to be the co-hostess for this swap.

If any of you know of someone else who would like to swap with us, let them know they can still sign-up, and, oh my goodness, go fabric shopping. Did I say that!? shame on me... I'm bad, I'm bad, I'm bad

And these are my skull fabrics, which I am NOT swapping... The one with the sneakers has skeletons that glow in the dark I am planning to eventually make a Dia de los Muertos quilt, so I am slowly acquiring my happy skeletons and skulls.

Cherie and Laura, I will update the list, if I haven't already, to add your sets.

Laura, great fabrics! The Skulls are cute, even though I don't collect them. As a matter of fact, I may have a FQ you can have....must look

It's startin', it's startin', yeah!

Oh, I just totally agree, welcome Jean. We do try to have fun here and enjoy ourselves. Glad to have you.

Alright Miss Cindy, you are bad!!! I absolutely hate to have my picture taken and did so under lots of pressure. Hadn't expected you to rat me out... so to speak! Can you be bribed? (purple huh?) I will put you down for 4 sets of B&W. I do like those choices.

Debbieann, I'm really looking forward to making mine up too, just as soon as you get the pattern written. Debbieann has put together a wonderful idea for using B&W layer cakes. I love sharp contrasts and she has it nailed. Now if we can beg for the pattern ...

If you haven't sent me your information, be sure to do so. If you don't have my address, please let me know. I've lost track of who I sent my address too

I will be in for 4 sets, as it is right now.. OH, Cindy, I want some of your 'zebra' print - how neat..

Keep cool everyone, it's HOT here!! Come on Fall!!!!

It's not that I don't like black and whites (well, not much) but there are some really pretty ones out there. I just don't think I would ever make a whole quilt of any size of just black and white, or even with a bit of colour thrown in. It's way too stark for my likning and I love my colours too much! I do have a couple of small pieces (and two 1-yard/meter pieces of dressmakers forms and sewing machines in B/W only - don't know what I'll do with them - maybe colour them in?) left from when I made a couple small items for my DD a number of years ago. And I don't do these swaps much anymore - too pricey for a couple of people living on one pension. I do miss the days when I could.

I love getting squishies in the mail. Ah, well, I just live vicariously. Don't forget fabric is twice the cost you folks south of the border pay, then postage on top, and it gets pricey.

Please update me to 6 sets. Roxanne picked up 2 more for me last weekend. I will try to get a picture (I didn't see any like mine posted yet), get them cut and in the mail this week. Not sure if I can get to the post office before Friday, but I will get there then at the latest.
I have to work mandatory overtime this week- and we had to work today too, so I couldn't do the thimble wallhanging- but the ones I just checked out are way cool!! Keep up the good work girls!

Wow! This is so exciting to see all of your fabrics ... this is going to be so fun to swap

Debbieann, I will put you down for 5 sets and the roses are GREAT!

Jean, I will update you to 4 sets ... we can always change the number. Those are really cool B&W's!

Midge, 6 sets it is ... and you have until September 10th if you want to change the number again ... I'm just saying ... I'm flexible if you want to go shopping ...

In cleaning my sewing room a little yesterday, actually I was looking for something, I found 2 more B&W that didn't have anything else to do besides go into this swap ... guess I will have to do some more cleaning by the 10th!

Ladies, as much as I hate to do this, I'm going to have to drop out of this swap.  This has been a very expensive summer for us - had to spend big bucks for a new well system, a new stove, and several other repairs that weren't cheap, plus loaning DD some money to tide her over 'til she got back to work.  And I'm still faced with a big insurance bill this month.  Next month Medicare will kick in for me, and hubby's boss will start paying his insurance again (he allows a set amount for our health insurance and when that is used up, we have to pay the rest  - about 3 months.)  So after this month, things should improve financially for us.  But in the meantime, I really have to watch our finances.

I'll enjoy looking at all the gorgeous black & white fabrics you gals swap!  And maybe I'll be able to join in the next one!

Hugs to all,
Nola

Milica, welcome to the B&W Swap. Glad to have you. I will put you down for 6, but have plenty of time to change the number... What address would you like to use? Can you PM me?

Good Morning, Fabric Lovers! :)

Over the weekend I visited a couple of quilt shops while we were driving north to visit Charlie's Dad and I found three more fabrics I would like to add to the swap.  Below is a picture.  I think the one on the right is very similar but different from two other fabrics already in the swap ... but if you think it is the same one, I can take it out and find something else.

Annette ... please increase my count to 8 sets.  Should any of my fabrics turn out to be duplicates, do not hesitate to send them back unswapped ... and when you do swap, please remember that I always welcome to send me doubles of any squares if need be. :)

All the fabrics in the album and so pretty!!!!

:-) Pat

Thank you Cindy for all the help. Denise, there have been some pictures that I can't move and Cindy has been wonderful enough to capture them and place in the album as she can. I do apologize for the delay.

Pat, I will update your number of sets, and remember, you have until Sept 10th to change it again

This is going to be so fun.....

Well I ran into the lqs today and grabbed a yard of batik for a Birthday swap got that mailed off too. Then had to pick up a yard of Fall print and green tot...hubby was waiting in the car so I'll have to go back by myself to choose my b&w fabrics. First I want to see how much yardage I have in it. Do all blocks in a set need to be the same? Hugs, Betty

PS I must tell you that I haven't used the BettyMaxine in so long it's hard to sign that! I am known as CajunBear in all my Embroidery groups since I am Webmaster at http://www.designsandbearstoo.com/ so forgive me as this just comes automatically never know when I will sign that way.

hi betty!  some of us would know you no matter how you sign your posts!

to answer your question:

"You may swap as many sets as you like. Scrappy sets are okay. However, PLEASE DO NOT SEND MORE THAN 10 squares or ONE SET of each fabric. Different colorways of the same print are okay. For example, if you find a white background with a black daisy, you can swap the opposite one as well, the black background with a white daisy."

as long as there are 10 squares in each set, you should be good to go!  just holler if you have any other questions!

Wow! What a surprise to get home and have a squishie in the mail. Sally, you B&W's are great

I will take a proper picture tomorrow when the light is better so they show off well. Thought I might check out the H.L. this weekend, but after today, I think I better stick a little close to home. Maybe next weekend. Let me know what you think!

Don't worry Betty, like Cindy says, we will figure it out....

As to swap fabrics, Cindy is correct, but when in doubt, please ask. It's easier to keep track that way. Besides, we all will learn something....

DH cataract (?) surgery is over. Spent almost all day in the Dr. office. Now for the 24 hour after check-up tomorrow.

Hi Debbieann,
Annette is about 100 miles or so north of me (takes me around 2 1/2 hrs to get to Las Vegas, unless the traffic is heavy!) I'm headed that way tomorrow (well, not quite to Vegas, I'm going to Henderson which is just south of there)

this is the part where you say:  "All bribes . . . er um . . . i mean . . . um . . . all tokens of appreciation, especially those of a "material"-istic nature (a/k/a fabric) to the swap hostess for her fabulous performance of her swap hostessing duties, for going above and beyond the call of duty, will be most welcome."

OK, Sally, I think I might have to order some batik skulls... you hit two of my likes in one! Batiks and Skulls Thanks for the tip! Of course, I should probably clarify for everyone, I don't have skulls around the house, only a few things around Halloween. I have cats and flowers and travel stuff in my everyday life

hehehehehe Glad you clarified that for us Laura. I was beginning to wonder ... not!

Gerda, thanks for the link. I like some of the curvie stuff, but like more sharpness of contrast - for me anyway. I did get some good ideas to work on in EQ5. Thank you. I did buy another B&W book from them though. It won't work with layer cakes, but might foster some more ideas ... http://www.connectingthreads.com/cfbooks/book_display.cfm?ID=45019  If this doesn't get you there, the book is Black, White and Bold.

Nothing new here, but hot. No squishies in the mail today. Thank you Cindy for giving me the information to cut and paste, should I need it, for future offers of the suspicious kind.... hehehe

Okay, so here are pictures of mine and Nikki's fabrics! She has four and I have 8. If you see any repeats let me know! I tried to look but the only thing I caught was the opposite of one. But it's hard to tell. So let me know if I need to pull one!

Nikki's are the first picture and mine are the last 2!

Thanks and I can't wait for hints!

Sherry, those fabrics are wonderful! Just yummy ... I am so looking forward to swapping..... I will get them posted in the album if Miss Cindy hasn't already.

Which means Debbieann cooked up something, I'm tagging along and if you want, y'all can play too.....it's more fun with friends...

Annette

The album is now updated. Let me know if I have missed anyone's fabrics. Since everyone but me has decided on your fabrics, does that mean they are in the mail? I'm just asking ...

Tonite I like red - this goes quite nice with black & white.

Look for a new exciting thread to appear this weekend.

Annette and I going to host a funfilled exciting adventure for you. We have talked with Jess and she is all for it. Even Ms. Cindy has caught a glimpse.

Wait and see - there will still be time to join the swap or add to your sets. lol

The event is going to be named to honour our founder of the swap - Annette.

I'm so excited

Well guess I'm really dense - I haven't figured out the 'clues'...never have been any good at guessing games... Is it going to be a project to use the black & whites, or adding a color? Maybe a tablerunner, adding PINK (MY COLOR, hee hee hee) or turquoise? Ms's Cindy and Gerda knows how I love PINK...

Oh Jean this big and bright surprize would look stunning with your colours - pink or turquoise.

I hope you have lots of them in your stash. This will help you clean them all up. Little pieces to big pieces.

You'll see this weekend pics will appear.

Hey Annette,
Would it be possible to change me to 4 sets? After seeing Debbiann's pattern, I will need more sets. I think 4 sets will do me fine along with fabric from my stash. I love that pattern, my stars will be pink.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Wow! All kinds of action

Welcome Dana to the swap. Glad to have you and I hope you will join more as we move through the year. We try to have fun and get a little crazy at times..... I will add your name to the list with 1 set. You can add more sets up until the 10th, but not after that. Have you seen Debbieann's creation to use the B&W on......?

Rebecca, I will update your sets to 4. I love pink ... all shades ...that should be wonderful!

Gerda, that is a great picture of a black and white quilt! I love it.

I'm so looking forward to joining the quilt along to use up these beauties. It's gonna be fun!

Good Morning Ladies!

Dorian, would you like to play with black and white or would you prefer to use other colors. I love Debbieann's pattern, but would also like to see it made in other colors. If you are willing, so are we.....

I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures BettyMaxine. If you are having trouble posting, just ask and we will try to offer all sorts of ideas! We've all been there at one time or another!

Well unfortnutely Annette, I think I am going to have to save this pattern and do it another time. I just don't have the fabric or funds for it .

I do think this will look great in other color ways, but the black/white with colored stars will be awesome, and "look" like the night sky in LV, more than any other colorway.

hi dana!  i am not sure if this what you are asking, but for each layer cake you send (one layer cake equals ten 10" squares cut from one yard of fabric) annette will swap each piece of the cake and you will receive ten DIFFERENT 10" squares back . . . i bet i just made that as clear as mud huh?

HI Dana

We are exchanging layercakes usually 1 set (which is 10 - 10" sqs) are the same. HOWEVER sometimes some paeople have several different print in a set to add up to then required 10.

So when you say" 2sets of different fabrics" one set is one print and the other is another print? or

Each set is 10 different prints in it?

Oh my have I confusaled you.

Either way I think your good to go. They will be all mixed when you get them back.lol

Annette or Cherie can clarify it better when they pop in.

AH HA!  ok I get it now.  I am currently leaning toward scrappy since attempting to bust out of my 'must use fabric from the same line' box, so they are all (mostly) different this time around.  I will have to see what i can do and rearrange into similar sets.  good thing i didnt drop them in the mail yet.  Since I mentioned Mail...  folded in half... kosher or no?  will have to go to the post office and see what they have by way of mailers.

dana, your squares of each layer cake do not have to all come from the same yard of fabric - just so long as there are ten squares in each cake.  annette will swap these for ten squares from other swappers.  most of us do just cut from one piece of fabric but it is not necessary . . .

are you still as debbieann says   confusaled?

and yeah folded is ok if that is what you need to do to get them in the mailer . . . not a problem at all!

Cindy,  thank you, nope not so confusaled any more.   I will blame my confusion on lack of internet for the last 5 days, especially over the long holiday. I wont have all the same fabric... something about fat quarters are sooo attractive.  I'm going to call one set swirly, the other dots/flowers/outside...

The first picture there are two of each of these fabrics

The second picture there are 3 of two them and 2 of two of them...

Dana, I need some of the one that has ants :) Are they ants?

Annette, here's picture of my additional fabrics.  I hope I didn't duplicate anybody's.  Roy is off to the post office tonight, hopefully you will get them as planned. Roy said, "I don't understand what you are doing," but he was much happier when I explained the bags would come back with a mix of fabrics from other people that would feed my need for fabrics. He's ignoring the fact that I am sending some to trade.

I can't wait!  Laura

oooo nice fabrics, laura!  i think i have some of the swirly black (the first one) only in red and blue - it is GORGEOUS!!!  and yes, those were ants on dana's fabric!!  i think the ants are adorable too!  can ants really be "adorable"??  poor roy . . . billy wonders sometimes too . . . but then i change the subject and he forgets all about anything i am doing in my sewing room all is good in the end . . . he doesn't need to know the means

annette, i bet jess would REALLY LOVe YOU and you would become her most favoritest forum member if you sent a piece of dana's paisley fabric there in that second pic . . .

i put my sets in the mail today, annette, you should have them soon!

Those meowsers alway make it into a quilt one way or another. We need to get a kitty emoticon.lol

Wow! Looks like everyone wants those ants. I think they would look great crawling around on Debbieann's stars!

Yesterday, I received a package from Rebecca. Wonderful fabric, feels sooooooooo good....

Laura, Cindy and everyone else, I will post here when I receive your squishies. As soon as I get the last sets, DH has volunteered to help me swap fabrics. At this point, I may be pulling my hair out and yelling, HELP Pat!

I will check the album to make sure the pictures are there from Dana and Laura. They look so great and I am soooo looking forward to peering over all these lovelies. With a towel of course...

Annette-
I sent my layer cakes out yesterday-- but I didn't get a chance to take a picture--Wayne had the camera with him again-- and since I got out of work at 3 instead of 5 (boss thought he was being nice!) I could make it to the Post Office Friday. Otherwise I would have had to go today. ( did not see any of my fabrics when I looked at everyone else's)
My reciept says expected delivery is Monday 9-13. Sorry I was so late.

Forgot to post last nite, I sent my blocks yesterday (9/10), priority mail, also included priority envelope/postage for return. I'm anxious to receive all the pretties. I can tell you from experience, getting all those packages, laying them out, then swapping, WHEW, it's an experience in itself. After a few rounds you'll get a system going.. I've been thinking of how to use the blocks, should I go scrappy, make triangles, perhaps frame ea block? Who knows, it'll be fun working with all.

Have a good weekend, ya'all

WOHO, talk about timely. Miss Cindy, your package arrived yesterday, safe and sound. I hope your move is going as quickly and is uncomplicated.

Midge, you are not late. The final date to mail is the 24th. I'm looking forward to getting your layers. I will let you know when I do.

Thanks BettyMaxine for the heads up. I will post here when they arrive.

Jean, I had no idea you had hosted a swap! How close did you say you are to Las Vegas? Have you seen the pattern Debbieann designed to use these beauties?

On page 10 of this thread, Cindy posted a link...or it is in the quilt along thread, below Quilty Aunties. We would love to have all of you join in the fun with us as we sew along. Debbieann will post a link each week and we will be able to "talk" back and forth as we sew. She has estimated it will take about 4 weeks. It promises to be a lot of fun!

Annette

I just had to share a picture for those who hadn't seen the design. It's called a Touch of Vegas.

For some reason I had the date of September 11 in my mind as the deadline to mail them, but now I feel better that they will be there BEFORE the deadline!! (at least something is going right for me)

Thanks,

WooHoo, all sorts have joined us from BC--welcome all!!
Still looking for my sewing machine fabric--keeping fingers crossed that I still have a wee bit to share. Love all that I've seen (I do love B&W fabrics!) Surprised we don't have lots of music ones as they seem to be all the rage at most of the quilt shops I've been in lately! I did pick up some more dog ones (doxies, bones and footprints.) Have you guys seen the yummy ones at Connecting Threads? (Their fabric is soooo silky and I love the prices, and 'Made in America' too!)

I just had a cup of tea and went through my new book that came this week. Below is a picture of one of the quilts in the book, 5-10-15+Fat Quarters from the House of White Birches. It measures 40" square, and I believe, would be of interest to those of you who do hex's.....Just an idea.....

WooHoo! The postman had a time stuffing our box today!

I have packages, unopenned so far, from: Jean, Midge, Betty and Dana.

Great idea Jeri. Which magazine did you find it in? I'm gonna have to look for it now!

Gerda, what a great idea for a unique shower curtain. I would never have thought of that.

Thank you both for sharing. Maybe they will spur an idea for someone other than me...lol

Off now to open these big packages......

Annette

PS Oh ladies, these fabrics are even better in person. Such gorgeous B&W.....sorry about the drool....and thank you to Cindy and Dana.

If you have a chance could you please take a picture of my black and whites, as I didn't get a chance to, and now the camera will be at camp for when my nephew shoots his bear. (I know better than to even ask for it to be left home) Maybe with all the overtime I'm working lately I should buy my own camera-- Happy Birthday to me!! I think I'll start looking this week!!

I totally understand Denise. My DH has me running and my boss has too lately! I'm never going to catch-up at this rate Take your time. Mail them next week.

Midge, I will get my camera out and take the picture. It's too dark to get a good one right now. I made my DH a deal, he could get a new cell phone and leave me with the old one, if, I got to go buy a small camera I could pack in my purse for use at quilt shops, quilt shows, etc. He took me up on it not knowing I had already done some pre-shopping. Anyway, he loves my camera, it has more memory and a better zoom lense than his and I paid a lot less-I kept looking until I found a great price. Good luck with the shopping! It can be done.

Now, Miss Cindy, what's this about you stripping? Hope Mr. Prince is involved in this enterprise

Spit and Canola Oil. I thought I was supposed to mail these dudes last week and I was behind (go figure) but now I see that I am not behind! Jeri's are in with mine Annette, and they have been all packed up and ready to mail out since early last week. I have a load of stuff I am about to send out, so I will send it all at the same time.

You know what is cool about the picture Jeri posted at the top of this page? There are no circles in the piecing, just the quilting. But it looks like there are circles because of the quilting! I am always amazed at how much the quilting can change a quilt.

The camera on my new cell phone, (a droid), is a better camera than my actual camera. it's 8 px! It works great for most of the shots I take. I can't get quite the close up I can with my other camera, but it works great for most everything I do.... and then it uploads to photobucket automatically.

Hi Midge, I'm sorry I missed the question. I bought an Olympus Stylus with a 10X optical zoom. I think we found it on sale at Office Max. The original problem was my phone camera was awful and I had to send them to my husband to download, because I couldn't.

Jess, no problem, I'm still enjoying getting these beauties as they come in the mail. Final date to mail is the 24th. No special trips to the postoffice needed.

We have been out of town for meetings and got back late last night. In the mail was a package of lovelies from Laura. Amazing!!! Who was it that said I have to send these out again!?

Silly , silly me

Forgot to mention  - for those that are doing the Touch of Vegas quilT

REMEMBER WHEN YOU CUT THESE LAYER CAKES or those that are cutting them

--- save the end sections after subcutting the 10" sqs from your rows. --- they will work for some piano keys.

By the way the piano keys will be cut - 1 and 1/2 " x 5" and we need lots. lol.

Rebecca, your fabrics arrived on the 10th. I mistakenly put your name in the body of the text instead of at the first of the sentence, so it was easy to miss. I'm sorry. They are wonderful though.....

Jess and Jeri, I will be watching....

Denise, nice pick. They are wonderful!

Well, I now have received fabrics from over half of you, but still am waiting to see 7 participants layers, plus mine.... I thought I would wait to see if I had any duplicates before I commit to how many sets I sign-up for...already, I have 3 duplicates.... just more to use for another project, right?!!!

Anyway, I need to start labeling these lovelies because they are starting to take up lots of space. DH just shakes his head as the piles grow, but he has been the first to want the packages openned as they come through the door He has offered to help me swap the layers and to use his office conference table and space on a weekend, so I may just have to take him up on it!: Something tells me I may need the help! I'm so lucky

And to return them they will come back home in the same envelope as well, if that okay with you!

I just wanted to be sure you realized this so you wouldn't think you were short a package when you got them all ready to go back home!

Thanks for hosting such a GREAT swap!

Jess and Jeri, your fabrics arrived in yesterday's mail.  Wow! I kept thinking, what did I order. When I opened the package, it was really fun to see all the layers fall out. I felt like such a dummy for thinking I got to keep the package, but thank you for my surprise. I will put it to good use on Debbieann's quilt.

Today is the day to get your layers in the mail. I am now missing layers from 6 people......

Now, to get organized and ready to swap layers on Saturday. DH has told me the football game is late Saturday afternoon, so we are starting early. Works for me and I will keep you posted.

Oh Pat, it was fun!

We started with breakfast out and then went to DH office to lay out the layers. We finished about 2:30, in time for football. DH counted to make sure I didn't make mistakes. These beauties will go in the mail on Monday Tuesday (I forgot Monday is a holiday).

Here are some pictures of our layout.

They look awesome Annette.

What an assembly line.

I will get things together for the "Touch of Vegas " quilt and have a emailing ready midweek.

More fun on the way.

Thanks Annette for hosting a fun swap.

Well, the layers went in the mail today... The lady at the Post Office was so nice and patient with us. DH decided since he had invested his time in your layers, he would spend the money and do delivery confirmation on each package. I would like to say, he did not do so for the 2 international packages. hehehehe We almost had to scrape him off the floor when it came to those 2! Sorry ladies.

You should be receiving your lovelies by the end of the week for some and the others the first of next week.

Thank you so much for participating and having fun.

Annette

It was my pleasure Debbieann.

Your pattern came through with no problems and so did the wonderful picture. I'm so excited. I want to start cutting, but I have a couple of things to finish first.

Thank you for "the next step" with these layers.

Debbieann, I think Annette and Sally are less than 200 miles apart - Annette's north of Sally.
Would that OUR postal service was as efficient - oh, well, we can dream!

Wow, I hadn't expected so many to arrive by today! I thought some of you might get them by Saturday and Monday.

It was so much fun swapping and I had a very good helper who is now done with fabric for a while, especially black and white! He counted everything to make sure my count was correct and pre-packaged. Some of you are getting "creatively folded" squares back...

Milica, we both have our fingers crossed that your fabrics arrive safe and sound. We put your layers in your original envelope, left the labels, but changed "to and from" and put it all in another bubble envelope - with taped corners. We are hoping..... and patiently waiting....

Enjoy Debbieann's pattern or whatever pattern you choose to use the B&W layer for.....Annette

My layer cakes came in the mail today!!!! Happy Mail! of, course, the house payment was also in the box, so the squishies helped soften the thought that it's that time again....

Annette - thanks so much for being a wonderful swap hostess... and Dusty too, for being a patient assistant....

I received a big package in the mail yesterday, didn't get around to posting last night..They are great. Thanks Annette, this was a great swap, hope we can do another maybe after Christmas? I love the variety of them.

I had a thought this morning, haven't put pencil to paper yet, BUT, I'm thinking of cutting the blocks triangular, and inserting a RED strip, (say 1 1/2" cut width). That would make an 11" block (if I'm not too tired to have figured that correctly) , then trim. Anyway, I think that's just what I might do with mine.. Also thought of separating them into lites & darks, making HST out of them (lite w/a dark), and working with that...OH MY, so many choices...

Thanks again for such a neat swap.

I thought about doing the Touch of Vegas with my black and whites....until I picked up a new magazine on Friday. Volume 1 of Better Homes and Gardens "Sew Scrappy" and they had an absolutely stunning quilt in there.. "Hit the rails"... and wouldn't you know, they showed it in black and whites- with red. I think that is what I will be doing with mine. (If I get all the cutting done, I can take it with me next month on my retreat!!)
I'll probably save the Vegas pattern for another time-- it looks really awsome.

I have now opened all my packages and had so much fun looking at all the fabrics. Now to figure out what to do with them, still thinking about Touch of Vegas but want to play with EQ6 and see what I can come up with!

This was a lot of fun, I'm looking forward to more like this. I love the size of these blocks...you can do so much with them.

Here's a pic of another B/W quilt = this is the Ribbon Star pattern and could also be done with strips http://www.wondercutruler.com/ritz.jpg

Just goes to show what you find when you are looking for something TOTALLY different! (I was looking for New York Beauty blocks)

Annette

My layer cakes arrived today and were waiting for me when I got in from work.  Thank you very much and thanks for the extras too, that was a lovely surprise.  Thank you for organising this.  Haven't decided what to do with these yet but think I will not use them for the Vegas quilt as have other fabrics in mind for that pattern.

Again thanks!

I do hope all of you know there are only so many ways you can use these layers and only once! I know I've changed my mind several times, but then, that's why we did the swap!!!

I'm so glad you got your layers Milica. That must be a record for timely! I hope Debbieann gets hers....

I'm glad you all enjoyed the swap and plan to participate in the next one. Not sure when and not sure who will do it. Stay tuned though...

Gerda,
Coasters actually. I'm going to save the big quilt for another time. This way I can practice quilting on my machine on something small before I attack it with an entire quilt.

What a great idea! Hmmm, it's definitely a good way to "get your feet wet" as far as a new technique AND practicing machine quilting.

What kind of batting are you thinking of using? Obviously a thin one, but cotton? poly? blend?

I hadn't figured out the batting yet. Cotton would probably dry quicker I'm thinking. Any suggestions?

Cotton would lie flatter, better for glasses so they don't fall over, more absorbent for drips; poly would dry faster - maybe a blend, though you can get needled polyester batting. The tutorials I've seen cover all kinds, though cotton is mentioned more often. I think I would go for a flat cotton myself.

Boy, that was helpful - NOT! LOL

Just a suggestion, Jeri, try using felt. I have used it for wall-hangings, etc. and it works great. It quilts nicely and lies flat.

Cherie... do you use the old wool felt? or the new synthetic type?

I buy the premium felt at Joann's. I am pretty sure it is synthetic. I use it in place of the batting and use muslin or a nice fabric for the backing. It really quilts well and the wall hangings hang straight.

I used all my black/white layer cake pieces as well..... not hardly a crumb left! LOL (well maybe some pieces size about 2x3).....

This was a great swap... thanks again Annette!

What is next? Let's see... we've done black and white, patriotic, florals, 30's.....

I'd love to do something like....... civil war / 1800's reproductions ????.... or even batiks (the black hole in my stash) ????.... how about blender fabrics? (You know.... textured looking solids, ie..red on red swirls, marbles, mottled, looks) we could narrow the color range or go total rainbow-).......

Just a couple of ideas.....need to get the thoughts out there!

hmmmmm . . . first we need to see if annette even wants to run another swap . . . or perhaps we have another forum member or two wishing to take on the challenge and hostess a layer cake swap???

as for which fabrics . . . it's only a matter of which one we do next go 'round, don'tcha think?  then the other can be done after that . . .

Hey gals, once I get well, I'm up for another one. Is anyone else interested though? How about one after the first of the year....starting in January and organized in December? Blenders sound wonderful and so do batiks, hmmmmm.

I would co-host for anyone wanting to start one now...

I've started a list, makin it twice, gonna find out , who's
okay, so I can't keep this going!

I do have a list started of the suggestions and we can do a poll to vote on the next theme for a swap. Any more suggestions? Poll is open until December 1. Still open to anyone to host too. I am willing to share....

I would be interested in the next one too. I vote for Civil War fabrics, but what ever wins will be good too.
Just wondering where the poll is to vote?

Thank you Rebecca for the push. I needed that.

I heard back from Cindy, and we have a "go" for another swap.

Time line looks like voting right after Thanksgiving (Nov. 25 for non-USA residents) and swapping in January. Now, to find the rules and read up on the time-line suggestions.

If you have ideas for what to swap, I'm still 'all ears'. or is it headphones? lol

Annette

any volunteers to host...just need to keep me on track...

Jeri, blenders are fabrics like tone-on-tones, marbles, and teeny prints that look "solid" - like red on red, blue on blue, cream on white, white on white, green on green.

Gerda, thank you for the definition. Jeri, you got the best definition I can think of. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Maybe, when we do the poll, we need definitions for new people who may not have joined us in the past...? What does everyone think?

Thank you. All I could think of was putting fabric scraps in a blender.

That's funny, Jeri! But totally understandable from a newer quilter.

Speaking of blenders, have any of you seen this line from Clothworks?? I'm working with a dozen or so of these fabrics for the sample for the quilt shop http://www.clothworks.com/collection.asp?ID=216

This doesn't totally show the fabrics, though - they blend from dark on the selvedges to a light in the centre - great for applique!!

OK, if you click on one of the colour squares, it does show a full strip

Gerda, wonderful fabrics. Though I am totally off fabric purchases I will bookmark those. I just love working with that kind of coloring. About 10 years ago I had half a dozen half yard pieces where the fabrics shaded to different colors. The line was called Auroa Boriellias and totally reminded me of the Northern Lights. I just loved those but have never seen anything similar since. These would work for my latest yen and it is not applique.

Gerda, love the Shades. Nancy Z. used them on one of her shows a few months ago and I feel in love. Aren't they wonderful. Do be sure and post a pic of the quilt when it's done!!

Gerda,

I love those fabrics and have not found them in any of the four local stores. Lucky you!
